JERSEY CITY MAYORAL ELECTION '09 SPECIAL EDITION

Winners
Winner #1:
STEVE DEMICCO & BRAD LAWRENCE & HAROLD “BUD” DEMELLIER & CRAIG GUY
Message & Media adds another impressive client to their Win column. And along with campaign managers Demellier and Guy, they make Healy the only Mayor since Frank Hague to win 3 times without a runoff and earn first ballot victories in 3 wards that were thought to be competitive.
Winner #2:
ELNARDO WEBSTER & CORY BOOKER
Cory Booker’s old law partner chaired Healy’s finance committee, connecting Healy with an entirely different universe of donors and bringing to fruition assistance previously pledged by the White House. And for the 2013 gubernatorial primary, consider that one-third of the state’s Democratic primary votes come from Hudson and Essex Counties.
Winner #3:
Bill Matsikoudis
No cable subscriber in Hudson County could miss the commercials touting Healy's environmental record, and he is due to receive a national green award next week. This can only help the prospects of early Obama fundraiser and J.C. Corporation Counsel Bill Matsikoudis, who reportedly has the support of Lautenberg, Menendez, and some key players in New York for the EPA Region 2 post.
Winner #4:
RAJ MUKHERJI & MICHAEL MURPHY
Not everyone in the state was pleased with the strong-arm tactics reportedly employed by Healy’s favorite Trenton lobbyists to dissuade them from supporting Manzo, who was an Assembly colleague to some Hudson County outsiders. But it worked, and Mukherji is assured 4 years to continue as Chairman of the Housing Authority and the resulting patronage.
Winner #5:
Joe Cardwell
Sandy Cunningham’s confidante and a close Lesniak ally maintained relevance by throwing his (and her) weight behind Healy and even brokered a deal to keep her running mate’s Assembly seat with the support of former nemesis, Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith. Watch for allies of T om DeGise to become increasingly accommodating to Cardwell as they seek the Senator’s long-awaited signoff on a DeGise nomination to the Port Authority.
Winner #6:
ETHNIC VOTERS
In Ward C, where Nidia Lopez stunned observers in a decisive first ballot victory over well-known challenger Jimmy King, costly ethnic targeting by Healy proved effective as registered Asian-Indian and Filipino voters turned out in record numbers, contributing to the upset. And a Filipino candidate (running against the Healy ticket) made it into the Ward A runoff.
Winner #7:
Kevin Lyons
The former Ward C candidate and mayoral aide (who initially sought to succeed Councilman Steve Lipski) managed a ward campaign for Nidia Lopez that exceeded expectations and surp rised even Healy’s own operatives.
Winner #8:
SEAN CONNERS
The renegade would-be challenger to first-ballot victor Bill Gaughan in Ward D is the new Chief of Staff to the Police Director and assured himself HCDO backing to succeed Gaughan—or for higher office. Some insiders believe Gaughan would have lost to the cop, who far surpassed expectations in his recent Board of Education victory.
Winner #9:
MARK SMITH & JASON O’DONNELL
The freshman Mayor of Bayonne and the young Bayonne Democratic Chairman keep the peace with the current and next Mayor of Jersey City by supporting Chiappone’s bid for reelection to the Assembly, wh ile ridding themselves of an irritation on Smith's Council (Chiappone). Meanwhile, a state grand jury seems to be examining forgery allegations against the Assemblyman.
Winner #10:
DOMINICK PANDOLFO & OSWIN HADLEY
Winner #10 text:
Healy’s Chief of Staff was instrumental in fending off potential challengers and reigning in potential defectors, and Healy’s former law partner (Hadley), the JCDC Treasurer, was a key architect of his victory and fundraising prowess.
Losers
Loser #1:
STEVE DEMICCO & BRAD LAWRENCE & HAROLD “BUD” DEMELLIER & CRAIG GUY
Healy's consultants lose out on anticipated commissions on media buys in the fury of fundraising and spending that would have inevitably occurred in the mayoral runoff. Runoffs in just two wards will not earn quite as much TV spending.
Loser #2:
HUDSON COUNTY REPUBLICANS
Former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie once joked that Republicans in Hudson County would love to be targeted by his office because “it would mean they are relevant.” Republican (albeit well-known) candidate Guy “Squab” Catrillo in Downtown’s Ward E relied on Republican operatives from the Healy camp and even brought in out-of-town Republicans to help with fundraising. In a nonpartisan race, Fulop pulverized Catrillo 3 to 1.
Loser #3:
STEVE HYMAN
The Sixth Street Embankment landowner spent his own money against Healy, targeting African American voters with at least 30,000 fliers that apparently had no impact on the outcome. Although the Healy administration held no grudge against him previously, that has probably changed … and he now faces a rumored inquiry by ELEC into his personal expenditures against Healy.
Loser #4:
RONALD MANZO
Loser #4 text:
Louis Manzo's brother, an insurance broker awaiting sentencing on federal insider trading charges, didn't amount to the operative the other Manzo was hoping he'd be.
Loser #5:
SEAN CONNELLY
Fashionable attorney Sean Connelly's website bio touts his "his erudite manner, impeccable garb, and exceptional oratory skills." But as Manzo's campaign manager, his candidate failed to garner even half of Healy's vote, despite running for the 5th time, and he lost big in 2 wards where his candidates with considerable name ID were widely expected to force a runoff, if not emerge as the top vote-getters.
Loser #6:
LUIS VALENTIN'S WIFE
Healy, the Hudson County Democratic Chairman, is friends with Monmouth County senators that are likely to heed his request to block the appointment of Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis Valentin's wife to a Superior Court judgship -- if the Governor were even considering the appointment, which he reportedly is aware would anger Healy. (Valentin dismissed complaints of assault and official misconduct by Healy, his wife, and witnesses against Bradley Beach Police Officer Terry Browning while allowing disorderly persons offenses against Healy to be prosecuted in municipal court.)
Loser #7:
Anthony Cucci
The former Jersey City Mayor and Healy opponent lost some relevance when he was defeated in April for reelection to the Board of Education. But he is in this column because nobody seemed to notice his eleventh-hour endorsement and efforts in support of Manzo.
Loser #8:
Senior Citizens
With Healy unlikely to seek a fourth term, insiders doubt that his campaign will pay for the production and release of a second album featuring holiday songs for free distribution to local senior citizens.
Loser #9:
FAULKNER ACT NONPARTISAN ELECTIONS
Frustrated by the prospect that a conservative Republican like Schundler could have emerged as the strongest opponent to Healy, some Healy insiders say they will seek to move the city to a partisan election where only the Democratic primary race will become relevant, like most larger cities (Camden, Elizabeth, Woodbridge, and Plainfield)… a suggestion that was initially offered to Healy by South Jersey power broker George Norcross.
Loser #10:
L. Harvey Smith
