Wilson welcomes other candidates, says he's heard buzz on Sobel

Republican State Chairman Tom Wilson hasn’t reached out to any other potential candidates to fill in for Anne Evans Estabrook, but he doesn’t think having other people running would be a bad thing.

Wilson said that he’s heard several names pop up, including United States Ambassador to Brazil Clifford Sobel, who has been named as a desirable potential candidate by Republican sources.

“I don’t generally get into the business of getting people into things. Joe Pennacchio’s got some momentum and clearly is touching a chord with people. If others want to get into the race, they should do that,” said Wilson. “I’ve known Cliff (Sobel) for a number of years and would be happy to talk to him about it if it’s something he’s interested in. There are a lot of things about him that are very attractive and he certainly has a record of caring about public service.”

Wilson has not called Sobel and has no plans to reach out to him. But, he added “if he expressed interest I would certainly encourage him if he wanted to get in.”

Please show us your check ...

I can see Wilson posting a "Held Wanted" ad stating " Millionaires Wanted to Run for US Senate...No experience necessary...will train"

HERE WE GO AGAIN: Is This Insane or What ?

This Sobel guy DONATED money to Frank Lautenberg for the Senate as well as Bob Torricelli...

Only in New Jersey politics would someone challenge someone that they gave money to get there in the first place.

One has to wonder just where was Mr Sobel on 2nd amendment issues when the Brazilians were at the UN trying to infringe our rights to keep and bear arms?. Maybe he will be given more than 25 seconds to explain that one

Enough, already!

Two years ago we watched a field of Republicans knock the snot out of each other in the gubernatorial primary while allowinf Corzine to build momentum.  Why would we want to run this course again?

The nomination for Senate has been open for months and anyone who has the desire to get in should be in by now.  We're now down to two candidates; let's allow them to tell us why they they would be the best person suited to beat Frank Lautenberg.  Maybe one candidate can emerge and start to build momentum for the general election.

Like Everyone..

I wish Anne well. This is not the way any campaign should end.
However, Tom Wilson is another matter. His idea of trying to draw someone else in here is pathetic. He knows that his time is running out of course, because both the candidates now are solid conservatives, with Murray being the more interesting choice of course. He knows that there are grassroot Republicans hungry for change in the party and that from the county committees to the youth they are ready to WIN against Democrats who have abandoned the center and are stuck below 40% in most polls. With strong conservative leadership, 2008 can be a good GOP year in NJ, while 2009 can be a blowout landslide comparable to 1969 and 1985 with polls being what they are. This will only happen with a real state party. Tom, stop doing the Democrats' work for them.

Oh my God

He donated money to a Democrat a few times.  You mean that he actually believed that a Democrat was better qualified than his opponent so he decided to support him.

Blashphemy - If you are a Republican, you can only support a Republican no matter what.  If you do otherwise, you are not a real Republican.  Also, you can not be friends with Democrats. It does not mater if you have had a successful professional relationship with them over the years - You still can never donate to them.

OMG #2

Isn't it about time that the NJ GOP just leave it alone already and let Jersey Joe and Sabrin go at it.....NOW is the time that we stop eating our young by undermining the choices of the rank and file county committee members.

Umm HELLO

First off all, name ONE Democrat that can do a better job than a Republican and name the job ..

Second, in addition to donating to Democrats, he donated to the person who he would be challenging in November ..

Sure, if someone wants to play both sides of the fence, that;s fine, it's also fair game if that person wants to run for office in the Republican Party.

Amen Sparxx

Theres so much common sense in Woodbridge I bet we can retake the town soon!

03/05/08 1:34 pm

I don't get it.

What is it with this Tom Wilson guy. Is he purposely trying to sink the party deeper into the sesspool than it already is?

You had 3, and now down to 2 contenders. Let the two battle it out. Stop trying to encourage your "Wealthy" friends to become career politicians.

We don't need "RICH" people in government, we need people who will abide by the rule of law. Having money doesn't figure into that equasion.

There was some strange fellow asking for Tom's resignation in another thread. I am starting to think that perhaps this is a good idea.

Wilson

I agree we need another candidate.

FOR GOP STATE CHAIRMAN!!

How insulting to the curent candidates who are working hard. All this name dropping is BS.

But I am going to name drop as well :

BRETT SHUNDLER FOR STATE CHAIRMAN

Thats if we are serious about finally winning instead of looking for money.

Rudy Guiliani

Tom, reach out to Rudy.  Don't waste this opportunity.  Rudy has the name recognition that the others don't.

03/05/08 2:38 pm

Dumbest Idea in a longtime

1. Rudy is not from New Jersey.

2. He dropped in the national polls because of various scandals.

3. He was a lousy neighbor to NJ while NYC Mayor.

4. He tried to keep and even hike the NYC commuter tax on New Jersey residents until it was declared unconstitutional.
