The filing deadline to run as an independent candidate in November's general election is at 4 PM today. So far, Democratic Assemblyman William Payne, who says he will seek the 29th district State Senate seat as an Independent, has not yet filed his petitions. Newark City Councilman Luis Quintana filed last week.
Several perennial candidates are running for the State Senate: Socialist Constantino Rozzo in the first district, Pro-Life Conservative Dick Hester in the 29th, and Louis Vernotico, who wants to end primary elections, in the 31st. Since no Republican filed to run in the 31st, Vernotico could be the sole challenger to Sandra Bolden Cunningham or Louis Manzo.
The Green Party has filed Assembly candidates in the 10th, 21st and 26th districts, and Hester has two running mates in District 29.
