Whitman preparing to launch congressional bid

Kate Whitman, the daughter of former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, is expected to seek the Republican nomination for Congress in the seventh district.  Whitman, 30, a former  congressional aide, spent the weekend meeting with a number of fundraisers and officials who are supporting her candidacy.

Thanks Kate, I needed a good laugh

Freeholder race...I think this sums it up

Freeholder Race a Different Animal

The Somerset County Freeholders are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Somerset County GOP, and the SCGOP decides who runs and who doesn't.  In return the leaders and funders of the Somerset County GOP get lots of jobs, contracts and cushy perks like the Parks Commission folks got.

Kate Whitman didn't get to run for Freeholder because she was essentially an outsider after spending years in NH and DC and not paying any dues.  The SCGOP saw no profit in running her, so she didn't get it.

But House members don't have any patronage or contracts to hand out, so county bosses usually don't care as much about them.  They sometimes use House seats to promote someone out of the way (see Union County and Mike Lapolla in 2000), but for the most part Freeholder, Clerk, Surrogate and Sherrif positions mean a lot more to party bosses than House.

So Kate would have a good shot at winning the seat.  Union, Somerset and Hunterdon counties all have semi-equal parts of the district in the primary so no boss holds sway.  It looks like there will be a primary, and as Ferguson and Connelly proved in 2000 against Kean Jr. and Lapolla anyone can win a primary.

Whitman has a name, has connections all over the country for raising money, and is in a fairly safe district where the serious players -- Kean Jr., Franks, Brammick -- all seem to be backing off.  Lance is another top-shelfer, but after that she's looking at having to take on Marty Marks!

30 year old Kate has a good shot with the name, looks and contacts she has.

Name isnt everything

"30 year old Kate has a good shot with the name, looks and contacts she has"

Holding down jobs that her mother got her isnt exactly resume boosting and I wouldn't consider Lance a topshelf candidate..he couldn't even hold onto his leadership position in the Senate.

Yo make a great reference to the Connelly victory and true, anyone can win a campaign. I think Kate is biting off way to much and if she truly has political aspirations....she'll need to playball in the minors before getting to the show.

Potential

Her strong showing in the Freeholder screening is evident of her potential.  People liked her.  What hurt her was not having held an elected position and, as posted above, not being involved locally.  She's now putting her dues in locally. However, it may be too soon for her to seek this level.

If the only "big" name she's competing against is Lance, she has a very good shot.  Besides being a very good public speaker, the trend is to get competent women into elected office.

Ugggh!

We need another Whitman, like we need a third nostril or a second anal orafice. Why can't New Jersey be rid of the Whimans?

I think that Tom Kean, Jr. and Kate Whitman should make a baby together and create the MasterRINO Race. I doubt the baby would never make it out of the womb in one piece.

Hurt GOP

The former Gov Christine Todd Whitman and her family should take their money and fad away in to the sun set. Former Gov Whitman put the state into debt and sold it to the highest Bidder(Easy Pass). Her and the Gluckets ruined the NJDOT .

Go Kate, Go!!!

Just what we need ... a 30 year-old legacy with absolutely NO credentials to assume a position of tremendous power in a time when our country is facing its greatest challenges economically (dollar collapse/trade deficit), militarily (the war on terror) and morally (you fill in the blank).

This daughter of privilege thinks she's qualified to lead our nation given the state of national and world affairs?  A name, looks and fundraising contacts may look enticing in terms of running a campaign, but they don't qualify someone to manage the lives and fortunes of my family, friends and fellow Americans.

Just one question to Kate's supporters -- if her maiden name was Jablonski or Williams or Damiano, would you feel the same way?  Enough said.  Like my ancestors who founded this great nation, I detest royalty in all its insidious forms.

You go girl!!! Preferably as far away as possible.

Let's Go Kate!

Don't underestimate Kate Whitman. She surprised a lot of people in her run for Freeholder and would bring a fresh, new perspective to Capitol Hill. She's a working mother who understands what it takes to set a budget - both a family budget and the budget of a major political organization, such as the one she runs. Kate Whitman in Congress would do New Jersey proud. Let's go Kate!

Hazel

Is that you Hazel Gluck .Let me guess you are going to run her campaign.

11/26/07 3:07 pm

The flacks and toadies are ...

... massing at the gates, ready to cary Kate to DC!!!

I have to admit, this "simple working mom balancing a family budget" angle is hilarious.  I guess Kate sits up at night wondering which brand of caviar to buy in light of mounting wage demands from the servant staff.  Then again, if her constituents are gullible enough to actually buy into a multi-generational millionairess as a modern day Carol Brady, they deserve what they get.

11/26/07 3:14 pm

not impossible

She does make an interesting primary candidate, b/c she'll be able to raise $$ w/ Mommy's rolodex.  She needs to be the only candidate from Somerset though.  Is that gonna happen?

But.....she would get smoked by Stender in the general election.

11/26/07 3:25 pm

She brings home the bacon

and can fry it up in a pan...

11/26/07 3:28 pm

Strange ...

Of course a name isn't everything, which is why I noted that Whitman also has a good look and good contacts.

She was also the communications director for the NH GOP, and I think their Executive Director.  Now she is ED for a political PAC, albeit one her mother created.

But what was Ferguson before he ran?  He had worked for the Catholic Campaign for America which had his father on the board, and was a part-time substitute teacher at a county college.  Then he lost the race in NJ6 and moved to NJ7 to run.  He was 29 at the time.

Yet he used his looks, family connections and personal connections to take down Tom Kean Jr. and spend four terms in the house.

Most of you know I'm a "lib" so it's all the same to me.  I'd rather the GOP ran a nutcase radical rightist like Dino wants, because that would make it all the easier to win the seat for the Dems.

But don't underestimate Whitman.   The Freeholder thing was an introduction, and Somerset and Hunterdon counties LOVE their pro-choice Republican women.

11/26/07 3:36 pm

What officials?

I'd like to see a list of those "officials" that are calling for her to throw her hat into the ring.

Always amazing when no one goes on record as supporting a potential canidate.

Maybe she should skip this race, and go right to running for the US Senate in 2009.... after all her Mom was Governor, and she said she could be anything she wanted to be, if she put her mind to it.

Is the list of NJGOP canidates this weak, that Ms. Whitman II actually has a shot at winning a primary over Lance? Whatta slap in the face for old Leo. Just proves what a milquetoast he is/was/will forever be....

Advice to the Dems ...

... consider a Kate candidacy a gift from ... well ... in these multi-cultural times, I'll let you name your own deity de jour.

To easliy win the seat, simply run an 50-something socially moderate decorated veteran who holds a reputable private sector position or runs his/her own business.  The problem Whitman faces in the general election is that she will likely be as far to the left or even more so than this type of candidate on social issues, so she gains no traction here.  With no military service or business background, she has little to fall back on in terms of life experience to contrast with such an opponent.

If the Dems are really, really lucky, during a critical televised debate Kate will give us one of those 21-year-old-in-the-face-of-authority-beer-can moments she's famous for.  Just imagine as she challenges the veteran's grasp of military affairs, asserts she learned everything she needs to know about the art of war from watching Platoon in a college film class, states that as a matter of principle in the event we capture Bin Laden we should refrain from applying the death penalty and stares confidently into the camera as her potential consitutents reach for the clicker ... all as Michael Aaron loses control of his bladder while laughing uncontrollably, thus ending a distinguished career in public broadcasting.

The GOP needs top hold that seat.  Period.  Kate won't cut it in a general election given her inexperience and her personal history.

Give Lance a chance and he'll bring you to the big dance!!!

11/26/07 4:24 pm

A Democratic Toast!

Democrats will drink to Ms Whitman's candidacy or maybe the freshman candidate will also too!! Hic!

11/26/07 5:19 pm

Name Recognition

When Christine married she took her husband's name Whitman and continued to use Todd in her full name, "Christine Todd Whitman."

I note that Kate, who is married, uses just her maiden name, "Kate Whitman."  Is it all in the name that makes for a successful candidacy?  Oh, of course, MONEY counts.

Democrat or Republican, left

Democrat or Republican, left or right, endowed with a political heritage or not, 30 years old is too young for a Congressman/woman. Even Joe Biden, who I esteem highly, wasn't influential that early.
