WEBBER PROPOSES AND SUPPORTS SYSTEM OF AGENCY ACCOUNTABILITY
Will Work to Implement Proven Program for Improving Efficiency and Effectiveness
Morris Plains, NJ — Republican Assembly candidate Jay Webber today issued the following statement:
In the late 1970s, many naysayers said that the United States suffered from “malaise and was on the brink of losing the Cold War. Ronald Reagan proved them wrong and turned America around. In the early 1990s, many naysayers said New York City was ungovernable and uninhabitable because of high crime and poor quality-of-life. Mayor Rudy Giuliani proved them wrong, and turned New York City around. And in 2007, many naysayers are saying New Jersey is a lost cause because our government is unmanageable. Those naysayers are wrong again – I believe the Republican Party will bring this State back, if we stick to certain basic principles.
We need look only to Mayor Giuliani’s New York City for inspiration, where Mayor Giuliani implemented a system for evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of government agencies through various performance measures of actual results achieved on a regular basis. This system of “CompStatâ€? was first employed in the Police Department and proved so successful that it was put into effect in other City departments. I propose the implementation of a similar system of accountability measures for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of New Jersey’s government agencies.Â
Under the Democrats in Trenton, State government has become more costly and bigger, but less efficient and accountable at the same time. Since the Democrats took control of Trenton in 2002, the number of State government workers in the executive branch has increased by more than 20% – a startling 10 times faster than New Jersey’s population. The Democrats have added tens of thousands of public workers, while private-sector jobs in the State have remained flat. We’re losing citizens and our economy is stagnating while the State workforce balloons.
I believe we must cut the State payroll in New Jersey, and hold government more accountable. That will help us reduce taxes and force government to use our tax dollars more wisely. And it will also help our State get onto the road to recovery.Â

Weinberg: 'history is going to defend Jon Corzine’s legacy'Former Gov. Jon Corzine has not gone quietly, not that current Gov. Christopher Christie has let the public forget him. Virtually every time Christie announces a new budget fix in response to a problem that he pins squarely on the previous administration,...
"I think he could be more civil. This is not necessary. I wish him a lot of luck. I have seen enough to know that this is the toughest job in America. I would never, ever wish this job on my worst enemy." -- Joshua Zeitz, a spokesman for former Gov. Jon Corzine, on Gov. Chris Christie.
