(TRENTON) - Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman today said that Governor Corzine's proposed budget heeds the public's call for steep cutbacks in state government and services to put New Jersey on the right path to reaching a healthy financial future.
Watson Coleman issued the following statement:
"The Governor has proposed serious cuts in state government and services to close a budget gap that has kept New Jersey in financial distress.
"New Jersey faces a serious fiscal crisis - raising taxes and fees is not a solution to the state's out-of-control spending.
"We have a responsibility to make hard choices to reign-in spending and put New Jersey's fiscal house in order.
"The Governor has proposed $2.7 billion in budget cuts - he has made some tough choices now it's time for the legislature to make some painful decisions to trim state spending.
"The Legislature must roll-up its sleeves and immediately get to work on this budget proposal to pull New Jersey's finances out of the red.
"We have a responsibility to carefully scrutinize all cutbacks especially those that could potentially have an impact on New Jersey's working families."
