For race against Garrett, Abate is Dem front runner

The early front runner for the Democratic nomination to run against U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-Wantage) in the fifth district is Glen Rock attorney Camille Abate, who lost Democratic congressional primaries in 2006 and 2008.  Abate is a staff attorney for The Bronx Defenders, a legal aid group, and worked for the Brooklyn Legal Aid Society from 1982 to 1993.   She is the founder of the Camille Abate Justice for All Institute, which published a book, "Know Your Rights: Every American's Guide to Dealing with Law Enforcement," in 2008.  She won 34% in a primary against Paul Stuart Aronsohn in 2006, and 33% against blind Rabbi Dennis Shulman in 2008.  She was highly critical of then-Bergen County Democratic Chairman Joseph Ferriero when she ran off the line the line in the last two elections; with Ferriero gone, the new Democratic regime (comprised mostly of old Ferriero lieutenants) seem inclined to let Abate take on the uphill battle against Garrett - partly to avoid the inconvenience of a primary.

If Abate wins, she would be the second member of the New Jersey delegation to go to Congress after losing two primaries: Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-Harding) was defeated in the 1982 and 1990 Republican primaries (to James Courter and Richard Zimmer, respectively), before winning in 1994 as the replacement candidate for Dean Gallo.  She would also become the first woman to represent New Jersey in the House since Marge Roukema retired in 2002.

Dennis Shulman was a bad

Dennis Shulman was a bad candidate. A smart man, but ran a decisively negative campaign and never even featured himself in a single one of his ads!

It's probably safe for Garrett to buy, not rent

Garrett wins 60-40, perhaps even 62-38%.

2010 figures to be a bad year for Dems nationwide (typical mid-term results). And it's not like NJ-5 is a swing district.

What else you got Wally?

Yeah

Want to pick a challenger to Don Payne in the 10th. They are lined up out the door for that one. Hell, make up some names. It is Friday.

Political silly season

Wally if you want something to do make up some more names in Bergen

a woman is needed

Abate could be a good candidate but she has alot of baggage. She almost got sued by her finance director and she has represented some very bad clients. The Wagner idea makes more sense. WE NEED MORE WOMEN!

Garrett is Untouchable

And that is the thruth Wally. Look at his winning record on years when Republicans don't score good. Do your homework before you write. Evereyone knows he can't be touch.

Abate.

Garrett will get 70% of the vote next year as the HOR goes Republican.

Abate is a clown and any Democrat who would help this gadfly is just wasting time and energy.

Vote Column "A" - All the way!

I hate Garrett, but he's tough to beat.

Garrett is WAY too conservative for my taste and he's much more conservative then NJ is on the whole. However, the chances of a Democrat winning his seat are incredibly small. The fifth district has been represented by a Republican for something like thirty years. If anyone wanted to unseat Garrett, they would have a better shot at doing in in a Republican primary then in a general election.

the only threat to garrett

the only threat to garrett it redistricting after after the 2010 census.

Garret is safe

There is no chance that Garret will get cut in the redistricting, if anything, his district will become even more republican as the dems will likely dilute republicans from the more competitive districts held in central jersey.

primary garrett

hearing anything about a moderate challenger to this right wing nutjob?

RORYAR = “the minority leaders aide”

We all know that any conservative wouldn’t be Deirdre’s taste. No surprise that Deirdre Woodbyrne doesn’t approve of Scott Garrett. Maybe we should run an Olympia Snowe type Republican against Scott in the primary where she feels that he is so vulnerable. Barak Obama is a “smart man” meanwhile; he is driving our country off of the cliff.

Scott Garrett has been a great representative for the 5th district with the only exception being the “arts & croissant” crowd in Ridgewood. In case the wishful thinkers have been wondering, the 5th district has been Republican for 184 of the last 210 years.

I thought that Deirdre signed all of her postings and encouraged others to do likewise.
