Progressives mull $2 million bid to oust Girgenti in primary

Insiders say Garden State Equality and other progressive organizations are looking at a candidate to challenge state Sen. John Girgenti (D-Hawthorne) in a Democratic primary - and that they're aiming to raise up to two million dollars for the challenger.   Potential candidates include Assembly Appropriations Committee Chair Nellie Pou (D-North Haledon), a sponsor and strong supporter of the marriage equality bill who could unite Latinos with others in the progressive base of the party in the heavily Latino district 35.

As a white man representing a district where Latinos and African Americans outnumber whites, Girgenti has been at risk of losing party support for the last few years, despite public pronouncements of support from Passaic County Democratic Chairman John Currie. Latino leaders have been eyeing the 35th district Senate seat as their best opportunity to double their representation in the upper house - from one to two.

Pou asked Passaic County Democrats to consider her for the Senate in 2007, but party leaders backed the re-election of the 62-year-old Hawthorne Democrat who has been in the Legislature since 1977.  Progressive support for a Senate run is said to be hers for the asking.

Others include lawyer Jeff Gardner, a well-connected activist who holds statewide leadership positions at Blue Jersey, Garden State Equality and Democracy for America, for which he also heads the Passaic County chapter.   Gardner lives in Hawthorne, blocks from Girgenti.

Don't expect Senate President-designate Stephen Sweeney (D-West Deptford) to care about  Girgenti's fate: the Passaic County Democrat was a solid supporter of Richard Codey (D-Roseland) in the Senate leadership battle.

Fundraising claim unrealistic

The "Progressive Groups" and Garden State Equality could never raise $2 million or any significant sum. Maybe they could raise $75K or something. When have they ever raised any money.

Girgenti is so beatable

Sorry ShoreKid - I have to disagree with you. I admit I'm for gay marriage even though I'm not part of Garden State Equality. I will say this, though - they're probably the best organized group the state has seen in years. Even if you're not for gay rights and they drive you nuts, because they certainly would if you're not for gay rights, they're pretty impressive in their influence and ability to gin up the grassroots. And I'm hearing there is such huge anger among progressives with Girgenti (and Sarlo) that national contributors are willing to step into New Jersey now who have never stepped in before.

Latinos and African Americans

by and large, do not support homosexual marriage. My guess is the voters will overlook the race of a candidate if this is the issue where the candidates disagree.

Time to go

Senator Girgenti and his ilk have had their chance to do right by the progressives who have consistently supported them over the years. As the Senator ducks activists in Trenton, his constituents back in Passaic County are looking for real change.
Too many promises broken, too many votes not cast, too much trust betrayed.
We Passaic County progressives are fed up. The time has come to field our own candidates who represent the progressive heart of our citizens and not the greedy, self-interested hearts of our current leaders.

are far left DFA liberals

are far left DFA liberals electable in hawthorne and the 35th district?
