Emergency room doctor looking at Senate bid in 7th district

South Jersey Democrats are touting Cinnaminson native Anthony Mazzarelli, the head of the emergency medicine department at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, as a potential candidate for State Senator in the seventh district.  Mazzarelli is reportedly testing the waters for a 2011 Senate bid against four-term Republican Diane Allen (R-Edgewater Park).  Allen could step down earlier to concentrate on her courageous fight against an aggressive form of cancer, a move that would trigger a November 2011 special election.  Mazzarelli joins Assemblymen Herbert Conaway (D-Delanco) and Jack Conners (D-Pennsauken), and carpenters union official Troy Singleton as potential candidates.

In addition to   being a physician, Mazzarelli is also a bioethicist. Though he's mainly stayed behind the scenes, he's has been the de-facto leader of a group of emerging civic leaders in Camden and Burlington Counties.   He was also recently recognized as one of South Jersey's top physicians under 40 by Philly. One thing that may stand in the way of   getting him to run, however, is his independence. He proudly   proclaims his moderation on his weekend Philadelphia talk radio show   where he is known for presenting both sides of the major issues.   Still he is said to be an ally of South Jersey political leader George   Norcross, who is Chairman of Cooper Hospital, and he helped raise  money for Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

This would be Mazzarelli's second bid for public office: in 1992, he lost a race for Boys State Governor to Richard Zeoli, a former GOP County Chairman who won a seat on the Sussex County Board of Freeholders two weeks ago.

Unreal

The vultures are circleing and Allen is recovering.

I hope that if this happens to a high ranking dem the gop return the favor.

Lautenberg

democrats AND republicans have spent the last year talking about who would get the us senate seat IF frank lautenberg dies. pallone and rothman and others are actually campaigning for the job. so thats the way the world works, give me a fricking break for people who are offended about allen speculation

Mazz is an excellent choice

We need more physicians--there's only one--in our elected state government. Health policy generates a lot of national press lately. But a single law from the federal government won't solve all issues in NJ regarding health. The complex, interdisciplinary nature of health policy requires physician-input.

On top of graduating from a state medical school, Dr. Mazzarelli has graduate degrees from University of Pennsylvania in bioethics and law. Could there be better choice?--tell me, because I don't think there is.

MCJ

Stop blowing yourself, dude

Mr Snrub...huh?

mazzarelli is a good guy. haven't met him but heard good things. he's moderate dem, not a weak liberal.

if allen needs to move on, no republican sounds worth it yet

mr snrub--how the heck do you know mcj is the guy the article about? just bc he has an "m" in his name and sounds smart?--you're an idiot. there's a lot of people who read this site.

Mazz is a Cinnaminson

Mazz is a Cinnaminson native. Does that mean he now lives outside the district?

If so, that means he'll have to move into the district (and deal with the carpet-bagger argument and that he hasn't helped local Democrats at all) AND lose his radio show.

I doubt he runs.

This is more smoke and mirrors from the "South Jersey Democrats." When you read that, read one person: Steve Ayscue.

Anyone else sick of how much this site kisses up to Norcross? Makes you wonder.

7th district

You people are SICK........

No doc Mazz. We go Irish.

No doc Mazz. We go Irish. Our boy isn't a candidate yet but he will be. To hell with this shite. He was there and he is there and he will be there. Screw you all.

Denny

He's the only one who stood up for Sen. Allen. I applaud him. I learned from his example. But if an opening happens, i go with him. To heck with these other weaklings who didn't even stick up for Sen. Allen. Dennison is the better of these crew.

Got to say

Dennison is the hardest worker in this party and the most worthy of the senate seat. That is, if it becomes available. I do not wish it to be due to someone's health problem. Funny however how other idiots jump in assuming that Dennison won't be there. He will be. He was. He has been. He will always be. Wake up people!!! He has many, many supporters, including me.

umm

ummm

um

umm

nope, i suppose.

nope, i suppose.

RepublicanBeast

Stop blowing MCJ.

Dennison???

The same Dennison that lied to the prosecutor cause his little supporters go caught RED HANDED stealing signs? The same ethical Dennison who tried to wage a campaign where he was running against Bush instead of Diane?

Please, Dennison is as big a loser as Fifis.
