Republicans across the state are in awe of George Gilmore, the Ocean County GOP leader who delivered a 70,000 plurality for Gov.-elect Christopher Christie on Tuesday. That's bad news for U.S. Rep. John Adler (D-Cherry Hill), who is preparing to seek re-election next year to a second term in Congress. Republicans held the third district seat from 1884 until 2008, but have struggled to find a candidate and are way behind in fundraising - Adler has $1 million in his campaign account and has raised more money than any other freshman. But now Christie and Gilmore are positioned to raise some serious money, and there's a fairly good chance the GOP will just left Gilmore pick a candidate.

Ocean
Christie actually got less votes than Chris Meyers did in the 3rd district towns in Ocean County last year. However, the Democrats sat home only giving Corzine half as many votes as John Adler got. This election was much less about Republicans than it was about not liking Corzine specifically.
If Adler can convince Democrats to come out and vote next year, sway independents with moderate and local issues and not completely ignore Ocean County like Corzine did, I think Adler will be fine. Adler doesn't have to win Ocean, just needs to play defense.
I think this gives the Republicans a false sense of hope.
Good analysis
I know the pundints are obliged to try and see patterns and tea leaves, but the circumstances, locations and depths of this governor's unpopularity were unique to him.
But does the new U.S. Attorney scare Gilmore?
How is that Toms River thing going?
Diane Allen
She could tie-up Adler in his geographic base and destroy him in Ocean County.
Gilmore will never pick her because she's not a stooge for him or anybody else.
I don't think GOP turnout will be as high next year which should benefit Adler.
It'll be interesting to see if Gilmore picks one of his stooges like "Fat Jack" Kelly and wind up with a likely primary challenge from the extreme rightwingers or even from Chris Myers. Now that'll be interesting.
