Stepien disappointed that 'NJN will allow the Corzine campaign to exert unnecessary influence over the debate'

Chris Christie's campaign says that New Jersey Network (NJN) has bowed to pressure from Gov. Jon Corzine's campaign by proposing a change in the gubernatorial debate schedule.  NJN has asked the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) to move the debate from October 1 to October 22 to accommodate the governor's schedule.

The full text of a letter from Christie campaign manager Bill Stepien to ELEC Chair Jerry Fitzgerald English:

Dear Ms. English:

I learned for the first time yesterday that NJN has decided to unilaterally change the long-settled debate schedule because of pressure from the Corzine campaign (the only campaign optionally participating in the debates due to their self-funding status).  NJN's decision to bow to pressure from the Corzine campaign is extremely disappointing, and suggests that NJN will allow the Corzine campaign to exert unnecessary influence over the debate.

If the Corzine campaign is serious about engaging in a frank and open discussion about the important issues facing this state, they must respect the current schedule and appear for the debate on the scheduled date.  It remains unclear why the Corzine campaign has requested a three week delay in this scheduled debate, but the length of the delay is certainly suspicious.  Seeking to delay the debate three full weeks appears to be a strategic consideration, not a scheduling conflict.  Chris Christie is prepared to have the debate on the originally established date, and strongly believes that the debates should proceed as scheduled.

I also note that the proposed delay by the Corzine campaign will impact upon the date of the debate between the candidates for Lieutenant Governor.  The voters of this state should not be forced to wait until just a few days before the election to begin hearing from the candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor in this campaign.  Unfortunately, the proposed delay tactics from the Corzine campaign would create just such a result.  We urge you to reconsider this decision, and to honor the date originally established for the first debate on October 1st.

Thank you,

Bill Stepien
Christie-Guadagno Campaign Manager

Typical Corzine Campaign

Typical Corzine Campaign Move....don't address the issues until enough money has been spent of ads in the media and the issues are lost. No surprises since it looks more and more like Corzine could lose. I could see a week to ten days to move it, but almost a month and a few days before the election no the less. Corzine will probably be out of state while his campaign figures out ways to save his rear-end.

NJN should have been shut down years ago....

this is one of the most absurd wastes of money in the State. My favorite was when Kent Monahan took early retirement from the state last year (yes, can you believe taxpayers are on the hook for the pension of a "newscaster", while people in this state go hungry?), then she took over as Exec. Director of NJN and drew another paycheck.

Taxpayers fund this folly, while the airwaves are clogged with FREE local and national televison broadcasts! On top of that we already have public televison on NY and Philly.

My guess is that the funding is dependent on positive messaging of the Governor's agenda. Why else would we spend mony on this boondoggle, while people with real needs suffer?

how can he possibly justify...

What's the govenor doing for those three weeks? Is he not in NJ? The debates will take like two hours, in the evening, like a month from now. Is his schedule really that busy? And if it was, he really can't cancel one dinner appointment? This is absurd, face your record govenor, stop dodging the issues

State Television

Communist Russia has State TV too....

A Mistake By Corzine....

He should have debates on BOTH dates.  The more the better!!!

Corzine needs to hold Christie PERSONALLY accountable to answer all the unanswered questions!!!

Ten debates would be appropriate.   The more people find out about the details of Christie's policy ideas/ideologies; the less they will like him.

And if Christie lies and stupidly trys to position himself as a pseudo-liberal; he will completely lose the conservative vote.

Christie will say anything to anyone to win.  The guy's a fraud.

NJ ELEC

If ELEC moves the debates, I'll lose any faith I had left in New Jersey politics. Just another example of why we need reform. We need Chris Daggett!!

Move it to News 12 NJ

Move the debate to News 12 NJ, a real TV station that doesn't suck off the tax payers backs. Corzine will do anything not to talk about his record. DUMP CORZINE!
