Stender won't get BPU, will continue Assembly bid
By Wally EdgeDemocratic sources say that Gov. Jon Corzine will reappoint Frederick Butler to the Board of Public Utilities and that Linda Stender (D-Fanwood) will seek re-election to a fifth term in the State Assembly. There had been speculation that Butler would be replaced with Stender, who has been pushing for a state post following her second defeat in a race for Congress last November.
Butler, who has a base among state Democrats from his tenure as Executive Director of the Assembly Democratic staff, is not a shoo-in for another six year term. He lives in Somerset County, and faces that possibility that State Sen. Christopher Bateman (R-Branchburg) will not sign off on his renomination. Bateman has reportedly been an advocate of a GOP slow down on sign offs in case Republican Christopher Christie beats Corzine in November. (Bateman has also been feuding with the front office over his desire to see Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest appointed to a judgeship.) If Butler is renominated and confirmed, Republicans could not take over the BPU until 2012.
