Will Corzine pull a Gray Davis and help Lonegan beat Christie?

The tightening of the Republican gubernatorial primary has some pundits wondering whether Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine will spend some money in May beating up on Republican Christopher Christie, with the hope that he can boost Steve Lonegan's chances to win the GOP nomination.  A Quinnipiac University poll released today shows Corzine trailing Christie by seven points, but in a dead heat with Lonegan.

Seven years ago in California, Gov. Gray Davis was struggling to win the approval of voters as he sought re-election to a second term.  The candidate he most feared, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, had a 30-point lead in the race for the Republican nomination over conservative (and native New Jerseyan) Bill Simon.  Davis, facing minor candidates in the Democratic primary, spent $10 million on ads attacking Riordan.  That helped Simon win a 49%-31% victory over Riordan in the GOP primary.  Davis beat Simon in the general election, 47%-42%.

The conventional wisdom is that Corzine would rather face Lonegan than Christie, the former U.S. Attorney, in the general election.  The question is will he invest a couple of million dollars now that might potentially save him money in the fall?

I usually agree with Wally Edge

But this one makes no sense. I have said before, again, historical fact. The Liberal Democrat for the past decade has crushed the liberal Republican easily. So why would Corzine want to take on Lonegan who is not the machine NJGOP liberal loser that they always get to run against and crush?

Lonegan has a much better chance of beating Corzine because he has beaten him before and because his ideas and policies are totally 180 degrees different. If he faces Christie it will be the usual "who does the voter LIKE better" race and the Democrats always win those battles, by a very wide margin.

formaja

please come back to planet earth---you're missed by your family. "Lonegan" beat Corzine at nothing. The movement was stae wide with MANY people helping in labor and finance. Corzine would run as dirty a campaign vs. Lonegan, as Lonegan has against Christie. My guess would be that Lonegans closet is chock full of stories...time will tell.

What Pundits?

"The tightening of the Republican gubernatorial primary has some pundits wondering..."

What pundits are you talking about Wally? You don't mention any of them in this piece.

BP 3

Yes, gorednj, you will be

Yes, gorednj, you will be making up more stories as the campaign goes along. I have watched you repeat information you know to false. Is is Gored-NJ as in Al Gore?

What really shows what is going is that the Christie supports never actually say why they would vote for Christie. I figure there must be reasons that they don't want to disclose.

Wally, Find this stat:

Has a candidate who has secured all of the NJ county committee lines ever lost in a primary election?

That will give us some strong indications.

What's False?

Has Lonegan: Run a negative campaign? Yes

Lied and Distorted Christie's positions? Yes

Not Disclosed his tax returns? Yes

Not Disclosed his donors? Yes

Lied that "events" were debates? Yes

Have current AFP employees drive him? Yes

Sent out campaign e-mails to people who have signed up for e-mails from AFP but NEVER given their e-mail address to Lonegan for Governor? YES

Those are the things I have talked about...help me with whats inaccurate? I'm voting for Christie because he is a better man than Steve Lonegan or Jon Corzine  will ever  be. I'm voting for Christie because he is NJ's best hope of the choices we have been given. The reason our choices are few is because true BAD people like Rick Shaftan have made running for office a high wire act---where anything you have done--or not done will be distorted and exploited to the point where it's simply not worth it to be a public servant. Shaftan and his minions( Grossman, LaRossa, etc) are exhibit A of why good people no longer run for public office. Lonegan talks about the "good old days"....let me ask you Mr Ex Mayor-were they when campaigns were faught on issues not distortions and the politics of personal distruction. Lonegan, Shaftan, etc....unelectable and despicable.

The only person in the state

The only person in the state of New Jersey who has beaten Corzine is Steve Lonegan.  When are you clowns going to stop trying to revise history and instead acknowledge that fact!  While you and the rest of the bozos were sitting around wondering what to do, Steve and his grassroot supporters were out crushing Corzine and his bunch of lunatics.  We did it then, and come November, we will do it again!

"The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything."

questions answered, AGAIN!

I really get tired of repeating myself:

Has Lonegan: Run a negative campaign? Yes

Yes, negative on Christie and positive on himself.  It is called POLITICS!  Such thin skin you liberals have.  Now Christie has not run a campaign at all.  Negative, positive or otherwise.  He just sits there figuring he has things wrapped up.

Lied and Distorted Christie's positions? Yes

What are Christie’s positions?  That is something we have been trying to get you people to tell us for months now, and still no answers.  His web site, which I cut and paste, is vague and speaks in general statements like most liberals.  That way they cannot be pinned down on anything when they actually take office.  Like Obama, he says nothing.

Not disclosed his tax returns? Yes

Is there some law in running for primaries that requires him to do this, if not then it is nobodies business.  If yes then he would be in violation of ELEC rules and would not have received the last batch of matching funds.

Not Disclosed his donors? Yes

I am sorry if all you liberals do not like the rules and want to change them on the fly.  But unless they donate more then $300 (it might be $250, I will stand corrected) then there is no requirement to do so.

Lied that "events" were debates? Yes

The organizers of an event call something a debate, not the campaigns.  The people setting the event up.  So take up the terminology with them.  But Christie also skips candidate nights at the last minute as well.  He is a no show to over a dozen events that he said he would go to and then canceled.

Have current AFP employees drive him? Yes

And you know this how?  But let us say you are correct.  Is there a law about someone volunteering for a campaign while working for AFP.  I have driven candidates many times, and never paid once.  Is there some conflict there?  If someone had two part time paid jobs in politics, one for AFP and for a campaign as a driver.  If neither has any real authority or decision making powers in either, there would not be a conflict that I see. But again I ask. You know this how?

Sent out campaign e-mails to people who have signed up for e-mails from AFP but NEVER given their e-mail address to Lonegan for Governor? YES

I never gave my email to Merkt or Christie either but receive email updates regularly from both.  Listen genius, you have been told this before.  If you are a registered Republican who votes four out the last four times and your email is on any list anywhere candidates get it and send out updates.  If you do not want them anymore then click unsubscribe and you are removed from the list.  If AFP did what you are accusing them of they would lose their organization, which is nation wide.  Somehow I bet the people running AFP are smarter then to do that.

Poor comparison.

Richard Riordan is the west coast version of Rudy Guiliani, he isn't a real Republican! Dick Riordan never ran in a partisan election and won. His two terms as mayor of LA were against hopeless liberals (Michael Woo in 93 and Tom Hayden in 97) who could not win. Bill Simon was a real conservative with a track record of Republican support. Ironically, the best thing that can happen to Corzine is for Christie to limp into the general election the flawed candidate that he is and lose his conservative base in the process. If Lonegan wins, he solidifies his base and reaches out to Reagan and Suburban Democrats who see Corzine as a failure and unelectable. Corzine will lose to Lonegan worse than to Christie because Christie is basically an inch to the right of Corzine. Does anyone really think Corzine wants to be engaged and haunted by Steve Lonegan for six months talking about property taxes? Please. Corzine is hoping Lonegan falls short and Christie becomes the damaged goods candidate of a split Republican Party. Vote Column "A" - All the way!

Lonegan beat Corzine?

I see two posters indicating that Lonegan beat Corzine. Can either of you tell me when Lonegan beat Corzine? Before you answer, however, remember that Lonegan has denied he was responsible for running the activities of AFP. Therefore, you can't claim he was in charge of AFP because Lonegan told ELEC that someone else was responsible for making all of the decisions regarding AFP.

You can't have it both ways. Either Lonegan was in charge of AFP and responsible for making the decisions that lead to the failure of the ballot questions in which case he lied to ELEC and got public financing under false pretense OR he wasn't responsible for the decisions of AFP in which case he has never beat Corzine. Take your pick; did your guy commit fraud in getting public funds or was he just the water boy for the brains behind AFP? Not exactly an enviable choice.

We can only hope

That corslime is so stupid to get Lonegan the nomination. As for these RINO Liberal Lonegan haters... it's not our fault Tubby's pathetic excuse of a campaign is already falling apart.

White devil

I address this issue before. Please do a search on my previous statements and you will have your answer. You are not worth me spending the time to explain it to you in two languages again.

Which World?

On a world where words meem more than actions SL has merit.

On all the other planets (including earth) SL is a joke.

NRA_FOR_LIFE

Why dont you ask your friend Christie for  a CCW permit you moron.?

You may be wainting until he retires. You are no more an NRA lifer

than Christie is pro Amendment 2.

Vote for Steve Lonegan not Chris Christie

Paid for by Jon Corzine. That will work. Not.

Democrats want Lonegan

Lonegan would ruin the Republican party. Remember his dispute about a sign in his town being written in spanish? That will destroy his chances of becoming governor.

goredn

Christie has no positions you ass because he has nothing to show other than he sent some politicians to jail that I could have sent to jail and I am not even a Liar, oh I mean Lawyer.

Wally,

It is OK if you want to endorse Lonegan. You'll be well compensated for by lower taxes.
