Bastille Day 2009 might offer a snapshot of New Jersey political history that Gov. Jon Corzine might prefer to be kept out of the spotlight in an election year. Members of Jim Florio's administration and campaign staff will gather to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Florio's election as Governor with an event at Drumthwacket, the Governor's mansion, on July 14. Republicans might enjoy the comparison of the two Governors in a celebration that comes two weeks after the deadline to pass a state budget.
In his third campaign for Governor, Florio won a 61%-37% victory in 1989, beating Republican Jim Courter by 541,384 votes. Democrats picked up five Assembly seats to win control of the lower house. But Florio's $2.8 billion tax increase in 1990 led to a revolt in New Jersey politics that helped Republicans win control of both houses of the Legislature. The GOP picked up ten Senate seats and 21 Assembly seats. Florio's approval ratings recovered slightly and he came within 26,093 votes of winning re-election in 1993, but he remains the only incumbent Governor in New Jersey history to lose a general election.
Corzine does not live at Drumthwacket; he continues to reside at his apartment in Hoboken.
"When will Corzine invite everyone to eat cake – before or after this video presentation?" asked GOP State Chairman Tom Wilson.
