Corzine says he'd sign marriage equality law

Over 800 people attended a gala fundraising dinner on Saturday for Garden State Equality, a gay rights organization that advocates same sex marriage.  Tickets were between $225 and $1,000.  Governor Jon Corzine told the attendees that he would sign a marriage equality law, saying he hopes he gets to do that in 2009.

The Corzine administration also announced a new regulation allowing transgender New Jerseyans would to provide an affidavit of their gender identity to get the Motor Vehicle Commission to change the gender on their license to drive.  In the past, the state had required gender reassignment surgery.

The Legislature is widely expected to consider same sex marriage legislation after the November election.

good for him

Only one gubernatorial candidate for 2009 has the backbone to stand up for what is right, and that is full marriage equality for same-sex couples. Governor Corzine should be applauded for his courageous stance, and he deserves support from New Jersey's progressive community because of it.

Martin

If Corzine and the democrats in the assembly really supported marriage equality, they'd take it up before the November election. The fact that they won't should be a hint that they want your support but don't want to risk their own hides. If they were true proponents, they'd do this now and if the gay and lesbian community weren't such push overs you'd demand Corzine take the issue up now, not after the November election. My guess, however, is that the community won't call for immediate action and Corzine and the members of the assembly won't give it. Nevertheless, you'll support them. You'll do so despite the fact that their actions demonstrate their fear of being associated with your cause and then, when the election is over, they'll finally get around to marriage equality at a time when it won't possibly cost them seats. Some backbone Corzine and the assembly D's have.

Marriage Equality

It would be certifiably insane for anyone who supports gay and lesbian rights to support the Republican candidates over Corzine, as el diablo seems to contend. I'd love for Corzine to sign a marriage equality bill into law right now but would rather have someone like him, who supports gay and lesbian rights, than Lonegan or Christie, who are either outright opposed to it or want only the most cursory rights for same-sex couples. Lonegan is so homophobic that he won't even support civil unions. Christie has said that, while he supports civil unions, he would usurp the power of the state legislature in supporting marriage equality and instead "veto a bill legalizing same-sex marriage if it reached his desk" (Star-Ledger, 2-4-09). Any voter who considers civil rights for same-sex couples to be of considerable importance should support Governor Corzine's reelection.

Martin

The Dems in Trenton including Gov Cor$ine lack the cojones to do whats 'right'. El diablo is right on. If they were so sure they were doing the right thing and wanting to stand on principle, they would post the bill next week. Bluff called...they know the public does NOT support it. They are cowards, period. Kinda like voting 'present' :-) At least Lonegan & Christie are taking a stand, whether you agree with them or not.

Martin

I was not suggesting you should support a Republican candidate - I was simply suggesting that while you applaud Corzine's statement, it is a hollow gesture. If he really supported this issue, he'd address it now. The fact is that the democrats take the gay and lesbian community for granted and the gay and lesbian community never hold their feet to the fire. Instead, they jump at the chance to applaud these meaningless gestures. With respect to your statement that Christie would usurp the power of the legislature by vetoing a same sex marriage bill, you have to be kidding me. You are smart enough to know that in our tripartite form of government the executive veto power is every bit as justified as the legislature's power to legislate. Would you prefer an unchecked legislature? While I understand that this issue is near and dear to you, you lose all credibility with statements like that.
