Who will be elected Governor of New Jersey in 2009?

Whether you like Lonegan

or not, the man is reaching out to committee people and voters. He isn't waiting around. Heard that his people are helping urban committees recruit.

You have to be kidding

36% are voting for Corzine? I didn't know that New Jersey had that many brain dead people!

"The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything."
                --Theodore Roosevelt--

richard

36% is all he will get on election day.

election day ?

will there be a NJ by election day ? This economic ship is going down faster than the Titanic

Change

There is only one agent for change with in this lot, people want change, why else would a right of center nation elect a liberal...change. people want change, don't they? Who can deliver that?

Lonegan

Is the man. It's not two months yet, and he's in third, andrunning on Christie's heels. When Steve gets to be the Republican nomination he will crush Corzine.

The difference will be. . .

The difference in the GOP priamry will be footsoldiers. Money is nice, even necessary, but in NJ, the Dem's win every year because they have the most footsoldiers going door-to-door and getting out the vote.

Whichever GOP candidate has the largest & most dedicated volunteers this spring will win the nomination. And I know CC's fans have defended his delays in issuing positions statements, but without position statements on the key issues, it's tough to put together the dedicated army of volunteers necessary to pull this thing out.

Silly polls

These polls are silly. It's like asking rednecks if they prefer brie and chablis or beer and nachos.

Does anyone recall who the frontrunner was in these polls in last year's GOP Senate primary? Clue: He picked the wrong horse in the Kentucky Derby.

Christie

I was at the breakfast today to listen to all four candidates.
My Take? Christie was scared to death of having to take questions. He used some excuse about his sons basketball game to get out of there. My impression of Christie after seeing him run out of there was; for a fat guy he sure can move fast. He showed total disrespect for everyone that was there. You could tell that tell that most of the "Shakers and Movers" were behind Christie. I'm sure they changed the format in order to give their candidate cover.
The entire program format was extremely lame. Do I really have to get an update of the Somerset Republican Womans finances?? Everyone knew it was a filler to buy time and avoid the real issues that need to be discussed. The Somerset County Womans Republican club should refund the $ 30.00 entry fee.
Based on what I saw and heard today if Christie is the Republican candidate I will stay home on election day.

kraut

It is a tough call. But remember there are other names on the ballot for Governor and they would be appreciate a vote in their long shot chances. Also, not going to the polls screws up the few good candidates running for offices more directly affect your taxes.

Bitaryo

I think Merkt did the best presentation. Lonegan 2nd.
In fact after the meeting I went to Somerville where Lonegan was giving a talk. I have to say that he did quite well and the crowd there was larger than the crowd that was at Fox Hollow.
And they were your average Joes not some blue blood know it alls like at Fox Hollow.
As much as the Whitmans, Batemans and all the other silver spooners think they decide who wins, it's average Joes is really decide this election.
Who do I contact to get my $30.00 back?

kraut

I do like Merkt. My issue is that his organization is not up to speed in this early stage. And, they will become worse once the action picks up. I get the funny feeling that will do a disservice as Jersey Joe's org did to him.

Lonegan has broken the mold for the GOP. His people look over and act on those cards you fill out at rallies.

BTW I have looked at the reported Lonegan donations on some sites. Many are $10 and some $25.

Lonegan is the only choice

If you care about New Jersey, Steve Lonegan is the only choice. Plus, he will make a great governor. Christie is the typical do nothing status quo moderate Republican that has destroyed the party. That is why the establishment don't rock the boat wimps like Christie. Let's act like men (and women) and elect a real man, not a neutered puppy.

the reality-based community

Back in reality, anyone who seriously thinks right-wing extremists like Merkt or Lonegan have a serious chance at winning statewide office in ultra-progressive New Jersey are probably the same ilk who thought that McCain would win the state and that Sarah "Iraq was God's Calling" Palin made a great addition to the Republican ticket. There's a place called "reality"; I recommend rejoining it.

Corzine, the superior candidate, will defeat Christie, one of the most vapid, substance-less candidates in quite some time, just like Menendez defeated the last "great Republican hope," Kean Jr. So much hype for such a meager, ethically-challenged candidate (Christie).

It's funny to hear a Democrat

talk about ethics in NJ. Martin, the reality is that New Jerseyans are over taxed and over whelmed. They are tired of the morons of the courts dictating policies like COAH and Abbott funding. They are tired of the staggering debt and spending that has increased incredibly since 2001 when your party regained power.

Lonegan represent the voice of the taxpayer, the people who are going to push him to victory and Corzine back to Wall St.

Joe

This is not meant to be a shot, really just a question. What was the most successful campaign to issue position papers? Rarely do successful campaigns issue them with any degree of specific notions. Having to defend actions that you havent even taken puts any campaign on the defensive, when it should be all offense. Regardless, Christie is gonna win this race. He can sit at home and simply and easily collect County lines.

Question for liberals...

Which of Lonegan's positions make him unelectable?

And why would anyone think that Corzine having the opposite position he is any more electable?

The reality is that whether you like it or not, with every passing day it's becoming more and more apparent that Steve is going to be the nominee and our next Governor. So get used to it. And if you can't handle that, then move, because it's mighty cold outside.

Question for Mountaintop

"The reality is that whether you like it or not, with every passing day it's becoming more and more apparent that Steve is going to be the nominee and our next Governor. So get used to it. And if you can't handle that, then move, because it's mighty cold outside."

Isn't this the same nonsense you posted about "Maverick Murray" being the frontrunner on this same website last year?

And, not counting presidential elections, when was the last time an anti-choice candidate won a statewide election?

SJ

We don't know what campaign wins on positions because GOP candidates never take positions that differentiate themselves from Democrats.

What was the difference between Forrester and Corzine? One campaigned on 3 in 30, the other on 4 in 40.

What was the difference between Zimmer & Lautenberg? 25 years in age?

You leftists keep crying that conservatives cannot win in NJ, but we don't know that because none ever run against liberal Dems!

Furthermore, our rights are eroding as the seconds tick away. Obama & the Dems want to pass the FOCA to usurp power from states. This flies in the face of everything our Founding Fathers stood for, which was to give states more power than the feds. And while FOCA is being debated, the Times of UK published an article today about how one of their gov't leaders wants to limit couples to two children each with gov't funding contraception & abortion if necessary for enforcement. Twenty years ago, we thought the Chinese were barbaric for undertaking such policies; now they're being debated in Europe. And you know, what starts in Europe always makes its way into the U.S. for debate.

We need conservative leadership to save us from the ridiculous socialism that is overwhelming and destroying Europe, where secularization has led to a population growth that cannot sustain itself. Much of Europe will be bankrupt in 30 years because there will not be a young population to pay for all the social programs for Europe's elderly. Of course, the secular progressives over there will probably enact euthanasia laws to solve that problem.

We need a candidate who is not afraid to answer questions. I said that for 18 months when Obama ran. Why would I hold a GOP candidate to a lesser standard?

"We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work!"
- FDR's Treasure Secretary, Henry Morgenthau, in 1939, on 8 years of New Deal spending as an attempt to end the Great Depression.

Listen to Levine

Levine is the only Republican who can beat Corzine. He's more in step with the voters of NJ who are mostly left of center. Too many Democrats and Independents would never vote for someone who is too far to the right on social issues. That's why Schundler lost. He's campaign is very fledgling and is his name recognition outside Central NJ is almost non-existent. However, if he can get his name out there, you'll see him get more votes. He keeps winning in a town of 65,000 people where Democrats outnumber Republicans more than 2 to 1. That's 10X bigger than Bogota!! He's also got support in town amongst ethnic minorities and hard core liberals who like that he stands up for the little guy. Christie might have the name recognition but no one knows where he stands on the issues. Listen to Levine...you won't be sorry.

Joe/Mountain

Frankly we can say with a degree of certainty that NJ voters are moderate at best. Far and away poll after poll shows that NJ voters, even in blue collar districts, and even in what would be considered GOP strongholds are time and time again center to left. Of course there are countless real conservatives, but a NJ Republican is by and large of the Kean ilk. That is to say that the Nelson Rockefeller, Lincoln Chafes brand of Republican politics still has legs in NJ. Dogmatic conservatives will not win in NJ, because they never have. A Republican hasnt won statewide in any contest in NJ since 1997 and she was a centrist, that made considerable pro labor statements and was for abortion rights. While you might be able to make a case that Forrester, and Kean were Republican Light. You certainly cannot say that about Schundler, George Bush/Dick Cheney and John McCain/Sarah Palin. Thats why, if I am a student of history and even a casual observer of political trends, you can deduce that NJ has been increasingly trending Democratic.

Joe/Founding Fathers

Go back and read why the FOunding Fathers created the constituion. Lincoln phrased it best, it was a document designed to protect and defend the inalienable rights aforementioned in the Dec. of Ind. The Founding Fathers created a government in Philadelphia, out of a response to the weakness of the Articles of Confederation. The Founding Father had a system where the states had more authority than the nation government and, to them, it had failed at protecting the rights enshrined in our founding document. To be specific the cheif architect of the Constitution, James Madison purposefully wanted a system designed where the states and the federal government had concurrent powers. Despite the States being powerful in their own right, there was to be no question who the final authority was in the system. If you dismiss any of my quick description of our federal system, review Harry Jaffa's work where he reviews the interaction between John C. Calhoun and James Madison, when Calhoun drafted the nullification doctrine.

Joe/Europe

Does it surprise you that Europe's "secularization" has led to greater use and access to birth control and family planning methods in Europe? Would it come as a shock to you that there is less teenage pregnancy? Would it surprise you that married couples have less than 2 children per marriage, which by definition leads to a decreasing population...? There is positivly no basis for your unqualified statement that secdularism has lead to a population explosion. Comparitivly Europeans are far more in touch with the environmental imapct that humans have on the world. If "socialism" (which by the way is not in place in Europe) is crippling Europe you would know by the quality of life in most of Western Europe, where people live longer and have on average more disposable income, less debt, less stress, and more "free time" than Americans do. No onto the controversial statements made in the UK. I disagree with them. They were made by Tony Blair's environmental advisor, and despite the insensativity of the statement he is not wrong. Imagine trusting science? The global population is increasing no doubt and to make a rather scientific statement that it is irresponsible to have more than 2 children (the sustainiblity rate) is not wrong, it might not be pleasent but it isnt wrong. The part that you most certainly disagree with is government supported family planning and abortion. I think that health care should be government supported and that abortion is not ethically nor morally wrong so its obvious that I disagree with you. I do disagree that abortion should be used as population control, and the statement made in the UK was by one person, from a Conservative Administration. That person does not speak for Europe anymore than Alan Keyes speaks for The United States. The controversial comments of one cannot be superimposed on all

Has there been an ELEC filing?

Lots of insinuations flying about Christie's fundraising prowess....

Mom

Christie was able to raise a ton of money as a Bush fundraiser thats where the buzz comes from. Whether he can raise for himself if yet to be seen

That was TEN YEARS AGO

When Republicans held the Governorship, both legislative houses, and county governments in Monmouth and Bergen Counties.

SJ Fool

I rarely respond to you because you're a fool, but please tell me where I said that secularism led to a population explosion? I actually implied quite the opposite. That's why Europe's birth rates are not enough to sustain the nation.

Sheesh!

Time is running out

NJ Governor candidates

If everyone would LISTEN to each candidate, then THINK seriously about the mess NJ is in, most would agree that this state needs a practical, sensible approach to cleaning up our problems. There is only one candidate that has a record of practicality and good sense - Steve Lonergan. Take time and hear him out, people.

Lonegan's biggest advantage

is that he wouldn't have to use the NJGOP organization for a campaign. The Titanic can finally rest on the sea bed.

Lonegan's biggest obstacle

The GOP leadership. The County Organizations are populated with "Status Quo" RINOs. There is a block of 30-35% of County Committee that sucks from the public teet with one or more members of their family working for the State, County, Municipality, or Agency under any of those. It is hard to overcome that voting block.

Joe

"We need conservative leadership to save us from the ridiculous socialism that is overwhelming and destroying Europe, where secularization has led to a population growth that cannot sustain itself. Much of Europe will be bankrupt in 30 years because there will not be a young population to pay for all the social programs for Europe's elderly. Of course, the secular progressives over there will probably enact euthanasia laws to solve that problem." This is your quote. If you meant to imply that a decreasing ppulation cannot "sustain itself" you are whoafully unaware of the laws of nature and of men. A decreasing population in Europe is the least of their problems. If you meant that sustain itself is simply maintaining their current number of people then you are correct, but if by sustain you meant perpetuate with a reasonibly good quality of life you are very mistaken. I suppose in your eyes men and women should only have sex to procreate, and should not use birth control. Joe, take it from me buddy, thats a horrible way to live. In fact I would even argue that to you think only men and women should have sex. Sex should be within the confines of marriage, sactioned by the Lord, and only to make babies. You and the Duggers are perfectly within your rights to do ahead and live that way, but because the vast majority of Europeans are far more sexually educated and environmentally aware does not mean that they are seculare heathens. It appears that your propblem with Europe is that you dont think they are prudish enough.

SJ

America did great on that old fashioned stuff. We have a government screwing up everything it touches then to address the problems it piles more crap on their crap and expect the tree of socialism to bear fruit to feed the people. The economic fertilizer is freedom, not governmental crap.

If they want to look for the sure fired fix to our economy they must do an about face because the answers are in the past, not the future. "There is nothing new under the sun." Ecclesiastes

“A thing moderately good is not as good as it ought to be.  Moderation in temper is always a virtue, but moderation in principle is always a vice.” Thomas Paine

Corzine will be history

It appears that both Christie and Lonegan both beat Corzine. Republican v. Democrat Corzine is in deep doo doo. He is as incompetent as Obama. (Speaking of Governmental Crap.)

“A thing moderately good is not as good as it ought to be.  Moderation in temper is always a virtue, but moderation in principle is always a vice.” Thomas Paine

Rep Con

I dont mean to imply that "old fashioned" beliefs are bad. But my buddy Joe up there implies that other possible ideas and ways of life are and I disagree with that. I respect ones right to live anyway they chose provided that it does not infringe on the rights of others, but do not see how imposing that on others helps the situtation or decreeing that it is the best simply because it always has been. I would also say that even though its old fashioned, keeping people in the dark about sexual and environmental issues doesnt help. Europe is far better at this than we are. The fact is we cant keep having babies the way we used to (this is a global issue and the U.S. far outpaces many other nations in this regard, that is to say we do not have a problem with over population) Of all of America's problems, concenting adults having active sex lifes regardless of marital status, or sexual orientation isnt one of them. Thats where I was going with my post.

Rep Con

The economic fertilizer isnt "government crap" I agree, but the fact is the mass degregulation of Banks is what caused this mess. TO much hands off and this is what happens, Banks got bigger at the expense of working people (who are saddled with debt on debt) and then they asked for a bailout. When Banks were able to merge into mega-banks it left competetion by thee wayside...competetion is a good thing wouldnt you agree?

by the way

THis poll isnt showing any of us anything. Corzine wins this race, it could be close. But if past trends show us anything its that Corzine wins by 10. DOnt forget that Obama owes JC some favors and there are only 2 races in the country expect BO to be here and that makes a difference

With all due respect to all the thinkers on-line

Most NJeyans will vote for the person who connects with them on the economy and taxes, the end. I don't feel that will give a rats patoutey who's rights are trampled in the interim-If they promise to save their jobs and lower their taxes in the right tv spot repetitively, they're in. I think Christie's problem will be in explaining those big tickets items like the Ashcroft deal which may look akin to the coninued mess that is Wall Street.

SJ

You have just made my point. Who regulated the banks in the first place? It certainly wasn't the "Invisible Hand" of the market. It was G Crap! Then Government tried to fix it by deregulating but only shifted the advantage from one group to another, more Governmental Crap. They have no business picking the winners and the losers, the market demands will give the advantage to the intelligent, hard-working, people with vision. The losers will be losers so long as they choose to be. When they decide they want access to the American Dream they will learn to start at the bottom and work their way up the ladder.

“A thing moderately good is not as good as it ought to be.  Moderation in temper is always a virtue, but moderation in principle is always a vice.” Thomas Paine

SJ Please Stop

SJ, you are a fool. You are waaaayyy off course and have no business reading into anything I say because your reading comprehension is awful. So please stop "supposing" and assuming you understand anything beyond the level of "See Spot Run."

"We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work!"
- FDR's Treasure Secretary, Henry Morgenthau, in 1939, on 8 years of New Deal spending as an attempt to end the Great Depression.

Joe

You are a breath of originality. Your high brow intellecualism is second to none. While you never argues against my points, your rovian attacks are great fun. I still, for the life of, cant exactly figure out why you are so hostile. Am I ever hostile to you or anyone? I disagree with you, but I never call you an idiot or a fool. If you need to be tough on an online forum, I dont exactly know what that says about you. Regardless so much for "rarely responding to me." Life is better when you let it go Joe, I can tell from your tone that this page increases your stress level, maybe you should stop reading. Just relax.

SJ

I rarely respond to you because you don't understand what you read. You claim that you're not hostile toward me or namecall, but you take something I say, attach some twisted meaning to it and call me a religious loon.

Get off your mommy's computer and go back to your homework, kid. You need to work on your reading comprehension. Desperately.

I am done with you.

"We are spending more than we have ever
spent before and it does not work!"
- FDR's Treasure Secretary, Henry Morgenthau, in 1939, on 8 years of New Deal spending as an attempt to end the Great Depression.

Nice

Somehow you complain that this country isnt prudish enough and I live with my mommy as a result. I didnt distort what you wrote, I read it one way that was perfctly logical and when you offered your correction I noted that you were right. How am I such a monster? I didnt even call you a loon, I am only paraphrasing what has been in your earlier posts. Furthermore, I graduated from what is now Philadelphia University and the University of Pennsylvania (MGA). I've done my homework. You're way isnt always going to be right, Joe.

SJ Moi? Hostile?

I defend principles with all my might. If while one is being mugged, one kicks a mugger, that is not hostility. The mugger is hostile. When the Democrats or RINOs are mugging me by taking my rights, property or freedom and I defend against their political aggression, it is not hostile it is self-defense.

Unfortunately, Democrats do not understand restraingt and you can see that by the  parade of convicts.  RINOs are too stupid to understand that you don't have to "pass bills" to successesfully perform as they were elected to do, like protect the rigits, freedom, and property of their constituents. Guy Greg told me that you have to compromise to get things done.  That is probably why he is no longer around.  My response was "When ever you guys get something done I lose either my freedom, rights or property!"  Think about that.  Go back to any bill passed and find one that didn't fall into one of those political muggings. Take note of the Thomas Paine quote:

“A thing moderately good is not as good as it ought to be.  Moderation in temper is always a virtue, but moderation in principle is always a vice.” Thomas Paine

SJ's a libertarian????????????

In one of his/her many posts, I sometimes find a small grain of sanity.

SJ wrote that he/she believed that people have the right to live their lives in any way they deem appropriate, so long as they don't violate the equal right of others to do the same.

Nice libertarian sentiment, but how does that square with his/her Hamiltonian Leviathan? The Leviathan recognizes no right it cannot abridge with impunity.

The answer is that looney liberals like SJ use libertarian principles as liberal platitudes to justify their pro-choice postion on abortion.

If rights are universal, then all people have them against all others, including those who are acting governmentally.

Bull/Rep Con

That is a complete distorition of my sentiment, and taken way out of context. I was saying that we all have a right to live the way we chose provided that we dont infringe on the rights of others. I was speaking socially of course. You took that and went into taxes. I disagree with you, the government has a right to collect taxes, and provide for the common good. They are empowered to do so by the vast majority of citizens.

I am sure you realize that I disagree with what your principles are, but I am not hostile to them. I dont like them and chose not to live by them, but I am never hostile in my approach, nor am I ever insulting. The rather childish insults that I receive from mostly Joe and often Bull (Max is another story all together) are unneeded and pointless
