Saxton and Ferguson prepare to join the club

When Jim Saxton and Mike Ferguson leave Congress tomorrow, New Jersey will have nineteen living former Congressmen. The oldest is Peter H.B. Frelinghuysen, the 93-year-old father of U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen. He first won an open seat in 1952 and served until his retirement in 1974. The youngest is the soon-to-be-unemployed Michael Pappas, 48, a Republican who won an open seat in 1996 and lost his bid for re-election to a second term two years later. Pappas works for the Small Business Administration and will likely lose his job when the new administration takes office this month.
The former Congressman out of office the longest is Cornelius Gallagher, 87, a Democratic Congressman from Hudson County from 1959 to 1973. He lost the 1972 Democratic primary when mapmakers put him in the same district as U.S. Rep. Domenick Daniels.
Other living ex-Congressmen are: Robert Roe, Frank Guarini, Marge Roukema, Herbert Klein, William Hughes, Harold Hollenbeck, James Florio, Andrew Maguire, James Courter, Richard Zimmer, William Martini, Robert Franks, Robert Torricelli, and U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez.
Matthew Rinaldo,who served in Congress from 1973 to 1993, passed away in October at age 77.
