Despite major endorsements from prominent Democrats like former New Jersey Secretary of State Joan Haberle and her daughter, Dawn, and support from Alfredo Gutierrez, the owner of Xtra Supermarket in Newark, John McCain has fallen far behind Barack Obama in the race for New Jersey's fifteen electoral votes. A Quinnipiac University poll released this morning has Obama with a 23-point lead, 59%-36%, while a new Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll shows similar numbers: Obama 55%, McCain 38%.
If these numbers hold, Obama could be the first presidential candidate to win 60% of the vote in New Jersey since Ronald Reagan in 1984. The record for the biggest percentage for a presidential candidate in New Jersey is held by Warren Harding, who won 67% in 1920; Republicans won 59 of 60 Assembly seats that year. Other presidential candidates to reach the 60% mark: Lyndon Johnson (66% in 1964), Dwight Eisenhower (65% in 1956), Franklin Roosevelt (60% in 1936), Herbert Hoover (60% in 1928), Calvin Coolidge (62% in 1924), and William McKinley (60% in 1896).
