If Jerramiah Healy wins re-election in 2009, he would become the first Democratic mayor of Jersey City to win a second consecutive four-year term since Thomas Whelan was re-elected in 1969.
Healy first won in a 2004 special election following Glenn Cunningham's death, and won a four-year term in 2005. Cunningham succeeded Bret Schundler, a Republican who won a 1992 special and four-year terms in 1993 and 1997.
Gerald McCann, elected Mayor in 1981, lost his bid for re-election in 1985 to Anthony Cucci. Four years later, McCann came back and ousted Cucci, and held the office until his criminal conviction.
Thomas F.X. Smith and Paul Jordan both passed on re-election bids to mount unsuccessful campaigns for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
Whelan, appointed in 1963 after Thomas Gangemi was removed from office following a court ruling that he was ineligible to serve because he was not an American citizen.
