Smith to Georgia: Rescue or Reelection Ploy?
The recent press releases from Chris Smith’s Congressional Office, claimed he went to the war-torn Republic of Georgia to obtain the release of the Evans
girls from Howell, and other trapped American children. Is this a rescue mission or just a reelection ploy?
Certainly everyone wants these girls home safe. But, from press and media reports it appears these girls, on advice of the U.S. Embassy, are temporarily safe with their maternal grandmother. So what, in fact, is Mr. Smith really going to be able to do and at what cost to American taxpayers?
His trip raises a number of important questions, none of which are answered in his press release.
Did the U.S. taxpayers pay for his trip to Georgia?
What will Smith do that the Embassy staff hasn’t already done, or is doing, other than getting in their way?
Does his presence in Georgia divert otherwise scarce American resources, personnel and equipment, to provide him with protection, transportation and housing?
Does his presence divert the attention of critical Embassy personnel from performing their fundamental duties and mission to ensure the safe and timely return of these girls and other American citizens?
When his constituents are in need here, does Mr. Smith rush to the 4th District to provide assistance?
These are important questions that we, his constituents, and the news media, should be asking of Mr. Smith.
Puleaze
Give me a break. Nice whine. But even more disturbing than the load of bs just spewed by the first poster is that Wally actually took the time to add this poll. Must be a very slow news day.
What Greater Priority?
SreveM Retired,
Are you seriously suggesting that the trip to help rescue these two was a waste of taxpayers' money -- if it was paid for that way?
Crawl back in your little partisan hole!

First of all...
Why is this even being polled when this site already said the race was over? Smith will crush Zeitz, it was known months ago and only confirmed this week with Smith's heroic actions.
Secondly, SteveM, are you serious? You gotta be kidding me. If it was YOUR kids stuck in Russia with roaming thugs, you would do everything to get them back wouldn't you? Chris Smith is a hero for getting those girls back and for you to claim that it was done as a re-election ploy is a pathetic and absurd accusation.
I wouldnt go to far
The truth is Smith has been a perpetual incumbant for decades. He has been pretty do nothing for most of it too. I also wouldnt call the man a hero, but you do have to give credit where credit is do. I would like to think that he would have went election or not, the fact that it completely nails this race shut is a bonus. I am sure Smith appreciates the political points he earned. That said if he helped work to get two little girls back with their parents safely from a war torn region that is comendable and I am sure Mr. Zeitz will see it that way.
Smith = Results
Once again, Chris Smith delivers.
It isn't like

C'mon now.
I'm no Chris Smith fan, but give the guy credit for caring and doing something to help his constituents.
Smith
the Congressman from Virginia will win until he stops running.
When that seat opens up, could be competitive I guess.
