A new Quinnipiac University poll shows Republican Dick Zimmer within seven points of the four-term incumbent, Democrat Frank Lautenberg (48%-41%), but it seems that the National Republican Senatorial Committee has already written off the former three-term Congressman. In an interview with Dow Jones Newswire, Rebecca Fisher, a spokeswoman for the NRSC, said that Louisiana’s Mary Landrieu is their priority and “admitted the party had no other hopes of unseating an incumbent Democrat."
In 2000, then NRSC Chairman Mitch McConnell passed on the New Jersey Senate race. His candidate, U.S. Rep. Bob Franks, came close to winning even though Democrat Jon Corzine, then a first-time candidate, spent nearly $75 million on the race.

Another Left Wing Hatchet job
It seems that since this web site was bought out, Wally Edge has sold out to the left leanings of his new owners. The Wall Street Journal reported on the same story today saying just the opposite; that the national RNC is considering adding Zimmer to the short list of potential pick ups.
Remember when Politicsnj.com was actually an unbiased source of news?
"Looks" can be deceiving
Dick Zimmer was in the vanguard of the campaign to allow voter initiative and referendum in New Jersey as far back as 1990. His efforts ran into stonewalling and posturing by the then Democratic legislature, fearing a peasant's revolt, so to speak. I haven't soured on representative government myself, but I was among those vocal ones in Trenton during that summer of discontent calling for progressive reforms in this state, long needed. Any reason to distrust a candidate who advocates more freedom for voters where they otherwise have no recourse save the sometimes indifferent legislators? I think not.
Zimmer can win.
It's looks as though 2008 is shaping up as a Republican year after a decade of Democratic domination.
Corzine is the most unpopular governor since Florio and could be defeated in next year's primary!
In fact, he's looks as though he'll surpass Florio in unpopularity!
You heard it here first: McCain will win NJ.
Vote Column A - All the way!
Zimmer
gimme a break, north jersey guy. wally quoted the gop senatorial campaign committee spokeswoman, who said they don't expect to beat any incumbents outside of louisiana. you should get over your own partisanship and look at the facts: 1, nj is a dem state, 2, zimmer has no money, a freaking 411,000, 3, zimmer isn't doing anything, where's he been all summer? i mean it was beck and baroni, not zimmer, who was escorting mrs. mccain at a dinner in monmouth county.
insert typical sore loser comment...
"Jersey Joe" would have campaigned harder and had more support..blah blah.
Zimmer's been at a lot of events over the Summer, nobody's freaking covering it.
The real question is where the hell is frank? Does he even know where New Jersey is anymore?
This is a ten day campaign
No one is going to pay attention to anything until late October. Whoever controls the last week will win.
If it looks as if Obama is going to win then Congressional Democrats will tank in the last ten days. On the other hand, if it looks as if McCain is going to win then Congressional Republicans will tank at the end.
What occurs in August and September in this and other downballot races are irrelevant.
Y'all just don't get it...
Presidential election year... Obama wins NJ... Lautenberg wins NJ... Dem pick up in 3rd & 7th CDs... going into `09 Dems, sadly, will be all the more stronger and Corzine will be re-elected... it'll take a personal scandal of Neil Cohen-like proportions to turn the tide... Christie's just not credible and won't be able to raise the cash and build the machine necessary to pull out a statewide victory irregardless of how Corzine's polling... Lonegan, who? it's a Blue state and only becoming more Blue... again, I point out Passaic County as a microcosm of NJ... as good a job the Dems there do of running the County into the ground they still win...
Actually....
Actually it's a broke state becoming more broke. If Dems get their way there will be two types of people left in this state, the rich who can afford to pay the taxes levied on citizens in this state, and the poor who serve the rich. '09 will decide if a vibrant middle class will exist in New Jersey for the immediate future, or if it will continue to go south and west.
Wally is a pundit
The facts should will never get in the way of his opinions. Let us face it, on a slow day, he just makes stuff up.
backwards
Sore loser comments huh?
The State GOP found Zimmer and then gave him at least 7 County Lines. He wins then vanishes for 2 and half months.
Explain to me how any republican can fired up for ths guy?
DRILL DRILL DRILL = WIN WIN WIN
Basic math
Blue arrogance
with most NJ voters approving off shore drilling. By the time October comes around the brand Blue will be synonomus with Anti American, elitist, and arrogant Obama /Rothman types who have vested interests in the kicking the middle class out of NJ. Jersey Joe could have closed the deal here. What a shame
Rick Sinatra
Zimmer is the NJ Poster boy for "Republicans Against Principles." He will go the way of the other RINOs, into the recycle bin to be pulled out when needed to prevent any conservatives from making any inroads in the party.
Everyone is watching polls, but what they should be watching is declining tax base in New Jersey. Don't take a poll, go get the statistics from U-Haul & Rider Truck and see how many One-way rentals out of the state they are booking. A major part of their cost of goods sold is to have empty trucks brought back to keep up with the demand.
Smart people can see the writing on the wall. No one wants to be the last person left to pay all the taxes!!
Wally Was Just Telling It Like It IS.....
...On this one most of the contents was direct factual reportage, and the conclusion is logical and obvious.
Wally ain't no "leftie"; lol. (Unless you're so far to the right than anything left of Scott Garrett looks like a "commie" to you.
Anyway, folks....here's what Wally wrote: Try actually reading the whole thing and not just the headline...
