Missing Joseph Sullivan
By Wally EdgeThe New York Times endorsed Frank Lautenberg for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination. Sensing their work in New Jersey was over, the declined to cover the debate between Lautenberg and Rob Andrews on NJN Friday night. The newspaper is backing Dick Zimmer for the GOP Senate nod. Their decision not to cover the lone TV debate in the Lautenberg-Andrews primary comes a week after they moved their talented Bureau Chief, David Chen, from Trenton to New York City Hall. The New York Times, perhaps reading Jon Corzine’s memo on filling vacancies slowly, has not yet announced who – if anyone – will represent the New York Times in New Jersey.
Snarky comment: if the GOP had kept Andy Unanue in the race, and if Lautenberg wins the Democratic primary, would the New York Times need someone in New Jersey to cover the U.S. Senate race?

NY Times is shrinking
Their coverage on NJ was very limited, the NJ section gone, and now they have completely ignored the close in the Senate race. I think they have money problems and as usual, NJ gets the short end

agree with Dave, the NY Times has largely abandoned covering NJ issues on a regular basis. The Metro section basically covers the 5 boroughs only.
Even when they do report on a NJ story, it reads like a press release...not much intrepid reporting. More often than not, they report a story the day after the Star-Ledger has broken it.
What happened to the the two Davids?
There were two david, both with hard to pronounce names like Halbfounter and Kaswineski or something like that. Both great reporters. What happened to them? they were both assigned to cover NJ light years ago...

The writing has been on the wall for some time. Kudos to the Philly Inquirer for adding Jon Tamari in the statehouse to Cynthia Burton on the politics beat. Perhaps this is also a sign that George Norcross is preparing for his big push to take over the state, making NYT's coverage area less relevant.
