Sabrin claims endorsement of newspaper publisher dead since 1957

Murray Sabrin, who has anointed himself the “front runner” in the race for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination, issued a press release today announcing “Gannett endorses Sabrin for U.S. Senate.”  Sabrin doesn’t mean the Gannett that operates seven dailies in New Jersey – instead, he argues that the late Frank Gannett (1876-1957), who founded the newspaper chain, would have supported his candidacy.  Sabrin says there is a “striking similarity between Frank Gannett's political philosophy” and his campaign to Legalize Freedom.  Gannett sought the Republican nomination for President in 1940.

This is the latest shot in a feud between Sabrin and Asbury Park Press managing editor Gary Schoenling over a Gannett poll showing Sabrin the front runner trailing Dick Zimmer by twenty percentage points.

"As the employer of thousands of families throughout New Jersey, I would like to see the Gannett operation expand its circulation, readership and revenue. My recommendation would be for the editorial staff to return to the roots of its Founder instead of an expansive liberal philosophy,” said Sabrin.  "Frank Gannett would be extremely disappointed in the direction its editorial pages have taken over the years."

Subject: Monmouth University-Gannett Poll

Gentlemen, I'd like to set the record straight about the candidate's comments about the Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll in the Gannett New Jersey debate the other day.

In our view, the poll had scientific validity and its intent was clear to those who participated.

The sample size was 230, not the 160 or 170 the candidate cited in the debate. This sample has a margin of error of +/-6.5%. Sabrin was 20 points behind Zimmer in the poll, and even if we were at the edges of that margin, that makes the claim that he is the front-runner (which to any reasonable person's interpretation means he's winning the race) specious.

As to whether the respondents were likely voters, Sabrin said "we don't know" whether they were likely voters. Actually, we do know - they are not. This was not a poll to predict the June 3 primary. Rather, it was clearly a measure of sentiment among all registered voters who identify with the Republican party as to whom they would like to see nominated.

Specifically, the poll did not ask "Who will you vote for on June 3?" but rather "Who would you like to personally see as the Republican candidate?" This question was accurately measured in the MU/GNJ poll.

This is not meant to prolong the discussion of this issue, merely to let you know the position of the Gannett New Jersey newspapers.

I CAN'T Believe ...

That the Asbury Park Press managing editor would write such a stupid email.

Is there anyway of checking to confirm this Gary Schoening actual wrote this email? If he did, he should be fired!

In the one paragraph he derides Dr. Sabrin for calling himself the front-runner based on the results of their "scientific poll" and then in the next two paragraphs he admits the poll was not even Registered Republicans or those likely to vote on June 3rd!

If Gary's bosses are reading this story - they should move him to Alaska as soon as possible. He REALLY E-M-B-A-R-A-S-S-E-D this news organization!

Pathetic Polling

In a time when polls have gotten down to 3% margin of error, and likely voters in samples of 500+ are polled, releasing this faux poll just shows how far this crusty establishment media has fallen. When you are stuck in the big-government mentality that these papers are, you start becoming as sloppy as the government paper-pushers who have brought our economy to its knees!

I have to go now. Using the APP's methods, I am going to go to downtown Perth Amboy (since it is SO conservative there), and take a poll for the GOP Senate nomination. I guess i'll post the results after I get 22 responses.

all screwed up

230 responses w/ a sample size of +/- 6.5 is a pretty weak poll.

Even so, for Murray Sabrin to call himself the front-runner is completely ludicrous.

But, I would also point out to NJRonaldReagan and SewarenScoop that the pollster should not limit his respondents to registered Republicans, since in NJ unaffilated voters can vote in the GOP primary.

The stupid poll of the paper

The stupid poll of the paper does not take away for the lunacy that his Murray Sabrin.

Sabrin lacks character

Sabrin's press release exhibits why he should never and will never be a US Senator. It's exactly this kind of b.s. that proves that this man is not even qualified to serve as a fire commissioner, much less a member of the US Senate.

to Grover

Obviously you didn't watch the NJN debate last weekend - Sabrin ruled !

To ohman

Doing well in a debate does not mean he has the necessary character to be a US Senator. As the candidate, he has GOT TO be held responsible for these ridiculous press releases.

05/22/08 2:53 pm

Did you actually R-E-A-D the press release?

I thought it was one of the most creative press releases the Sabrin has sent out so far.

Here it is in case you haven't read it yet:

Wally Edge is at it again.

Who cares about all these polls? They are not even scientific anymore and so limited in scope that I wonder why even bother to take them in the first place. SewarenScoop is correct that his personal poll might be more scientific than the Gannett's poll or the Wally Edge's poll to our right for that matter. Dr. Sabrin was right to point it out. Let's take this science one more step further and declare the winner right now.

ohman

the debate was on Monday evening!  Attention to detail, please.

And, Murray wasn't that hot.

05/22/08 5:35 pm

Is it June 4th yet?

Somebody just come find me when it's June 4th and the circus known as the Murray Sabrin campaign packs up and goes home.

If you have an issue (ESedler and Grover)...

Get a tissue!

More nonsense from Murray

Hey SJBlue

Wheres your boy Frank? Not on Chris Matthews. Guess he was afraid to leave the penthouse and debate his first worthwhile opponent in 26 years. He knows he would lose, and he'll do the same thing with Murray in the fall if Democrats renominate him. He knows that if he debates Andrews or Sabrin publicly his poll numbers would plummet.

05/23/08 11:22 am

Actually

My boy FL is busy taking care of matters before te United States Senate. He is not out over-campaigning on the public's dollar a la Rob Andrews. Furthermore, Frank is comfortable in the real race not outside picking up scraps in the frindge with Murray. Murray and Frank shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentence.
