The May 13 race for Sparta Township Council is worth watching, where incumbents Scott Seelagy and Jerry Murphy face challengers Carey-Ann Shaftan, and Christopher Curry and Diane Layton. There could be some anti-incumbent sentiment in Sparta, where Mayor Michael Spekhardt, Deputy Mayor Brian Brady and Councilman Manny Goldberg face a possible recall election.
Shaftan, a former North Arlington Councilwoman and the wife of prominent conservative strategist Rick Shaftan, is running with Curry, whose father, Harold Curry, served as a Democratic Assemblyman from Warren County from 1963 to 1967. Harold Curry lost his Assembly seat to Robert Littell in 1967 (Littell went on to serve forty years in the Assembly and State Senate before his retirement last year). Kim Seelagy, the wife of the incumbent, was an aide to Assemblywoman Alison McHose, Littell’s daughter.

Sparta?
I don't think Sparta is ever worth watching under any circumstances.
Sparta Election
Watch? The campaign to watch will be Write-in candidate Jon Rush surprising everyone with a seat on the council. This is what really needs to be watched. He has a full fledged write-in campaign working and it just may work. He is actively involved with the group that worked on the passage of the referendum in Sparta and the recent election of the BOE who want the negativity to stop. He just may win.
He is supporting Scott Seelagy and together they are hoping to continue to lead in a positive direction.
The group of Shafton and Curry who have sought help from Jerry Wolosky, the anti garbage utility author, and the person trying to solidify signatures for the recall election of the 3 councilman will backfire. Wolosky has lost his support as he continues down this distructive path of negativity. Sparta is done with it. Furthermore, the mis-statment and distortion of facts on the quarry purchase from Mulvihill and the antics of Wayne Ring, who is also supporting the Curry/Shafton campaign, is backfiring too. They aren't giving credit to Spartans. They think Spartans don't know the truth or are not seeking it. They are sadly mistaken.
Let us hope truth prevails and Sparta can continue to have a town council who will proceed down the path with the following in mind:
• Protect Sparta’s unique character
• Prevent residential overdevelopment and strain on infrastructure
• Attract ratable businesses that will contribute to the tax base and reduce property tax burden
• Support development of senior services and activities
• Establish center for Sparta’s youth to gather and interact
Sparta's election is truly worth watching, I have a feeling it will be a nail biter.
carey ann shaftan
I would like to know who this women Carey Ann Shaftan thinks she is, i think that she is an ignorant pig. Has she never wanted for anything in her life, must be nice to live such a privileged life. I live in Sparta and have for 15 years raising my children, during the last few years my life has changed, and so has my financial situation, so i will soon have to sell my home, I would love to see affordable housing come to Sparta so that i can stay in a town that my children have grown up in, and i love. I don't want to leave but based on what she said i need to leave because i can no longer afford to live in Sparta..I guess Ms. Shaftan, thinks that Sparta is a bubble town and should be kept as such, being she thinks everyone who including herself who lives here is perfect and wonderful and free of sin i guess she doesnt read the Sparta independent police blotter, and so she can see that her neighbor or her friend was arrested to DUI or her children's friend was charged with drug possession, or maybe her friend down the block house is in foreclosure..Just because we already live in Sparta doesn't mean we all can afford to live here or be without sin......I pray that she never has any kind of financial hardship in her life, I hope that she does not win any election ever. She doesn't know people, and she has no HEART.
thanx

The race in Sparta is no
The race in Sparta is no doubt always watchable and full of entertainment. I could not watch it this time because I was busy in preparation for 310-055 exam that was held yesterday. It would surely be wonderful when Scott Seelagy and Jerry Murphy would face challengers Carey-Ann Shaftan, and Christopher Curry and Diane Layton.
