(WESTFIELD)- Union County Republican freeholder candidates Pat Quattrocchi, Glenn Mortimer and Diane Barabas said today they are running for office to save the taxpayers of the county from runaway spending.

The democrats have raised county taxes 51% since the year 2000, said Quattrocchi, “and I have personally suffered. Not only do I have to pay the skyrocketing taxes, my children cannot afford to live here and have moved away. The freeholders have raised our taxes, and supported democrats who have continued to raise our taxes in Trenton. The madness has to end.

“I can’t afford trips to Hawaii and Chicago, said Mortimer, “but the current Freeholders don’t have to, they just make the taxpayers pay for it. In Mountainside, we have made the tough decisions to keep spending low and ease the impact on local taxpayers, but the democrats in this county just don’t care. They love to spend the people’s money, and they go through it like water. That’s why our taxes have gone up 51%

Mortimer was referring to taxpayer funded junkets for freeholder and administrators the last two years to Hawaii and this year in Chicago. Union County sent 15 people at taxpayers expense to Chicago for a conference, more than twice any other county in New Jersey.

“As a real estate broker, everyone has heard about the cool down in the market, said Barabas. The freeholders of this county, by passing 51% in property tax increases, along with their support for higher taxes at the state level, have sent the market cool down into hyper-drive in Union County. The only way to stop the madness is to put the brakes on spending and grow economically, but that won’t happen with the current freeholder board. “

All three freeholders said that change is needed, and if the taxpayers have had enough, voters should pull the lever for them on Election Day.

“The people have had enough, said Quattrocchi, who has run two previous times for freeholder. “I will not quit on Union County. I will keep trying because, sooner or later, they will need people to clean up this mess. And Glenn, Diane and I will do that.
