Republican Committee of Union County - Come To Jail, Earn a Living?

REPUBLICAN COMMITTEE OF UNION COUNTY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 27, 2008

CONTACT: PHIL MORIN 908-789-0200

Union County Republican Chairman Phil Morin issued the following statement in response to a Star Ledger report on www.nj.com that prosecutors announced the indictments of a Union County corrections officer, a Union County maintenance worker and four inmates for allegedly running contraband ring. Authorities accuse the guard and maintenance worker of smuggling cigarettes, loose tobacco and a cell phone to inmates, who operated a lucrative underground sales network:

In the latest chapter of the failure of the Union County Freeholder Board to competently run the County Jail, today we found out that a major contraband operation was going on right under the Freeholder Board's collective noses. Of course, none of them will take responsibility for the rampant corruption of the Jail, even though the management of the Jail falls squarely with the Freeholders. This is another example of the All-Democrat Freeholder Board being more worried about photo ops and other misplaced priorities rather than making sure the essential services of government operate efficiently and free of corruption.
