VAINIERI HUTTLE HAILS CORZINE ADMINISTRATION’S NEW INITIATIVE TO COMBAT CHILDHOOD LEAD POISONING
(TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle on Monday praised plans unveiled by Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s administration to improve New Jersey’s response to childhood lead poisoning.
“This is an encouraging initiative and another step by Gov. Corzine to protect New Jersey children,” said Vainieri Huttle (D-Bergen). “Lead poisoning may not get much attention, but it’s a top concern, especially for young children in neighborhoods with older buildings. The more we do to tackle this insidious problem, the better it is for our children and our future, and Gov. Corzine and the administration deserve credit for these strong steps.”
New Jersey Public Advocate Ronald K. Chen, Health and Senior Services Commissioner Heather Howard and Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Charles Richman announced the changes during a Lead Poisoning Prevention Week kickoff event.
Under the plan, the childhood lead poisoning standard in New Jersey will be lowered and the state will make it easier to obtain funds to clean up homes and apartments Lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust in older buildings are the most common sources of lead poisoning in children, and Vainieri Huttle is sponsor of Assembly-approved legislation (A-2079) to require retailers to post warnings of lead poisoning from improper paint removal.
Children under the age of 6 are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely affect mental and physical development. At very high levels, lead poisoning can be fatal.
“Whether it be ensuring their health care working to improve our schools to taking on sex offenders who lurk online and around youth groups, Gov. Corzine and the Democratic Legislature have worked hard to protect New Jersey’s children, Vainieri Huttle said. “This is a core New Jersey value that will always be a priority.”
