SCALERA BILL TO MAKE IT EASIER TO ACCESS EMERGENCY SUPPLIES NOW LAW

SCALERA BILL TO MAKE IT EASIER TO ACCESS EMERGENCY SUPPLIES NOW LAW

(TRENTON) – Legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Fred Scalera to make it easier for emergency management officials to access materials needed to respond to a crisis has been signed into law by Gov. Jon S. Corzine.

The law (A-2457) requires the state Office of Emergency Management to maintain a regional database of public and private entities that provide emergency supplies.

“Emergencies are no time to be scrambling around looking for needed supplies,” said Scalera (D-Essex/Bergen/Passaic), chairman of the Assembly Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee and a career emergency responder. “Having a supplies database in place will help quickly identify what emergency materials and resources are available during a crisis – another step that will protect both emergency responders and the public.”

The law defines emergency supplies to include equipment such as vehicles, boats, road signs, flares, cones, lights, personal protective gear, emergency food rations and first aid materials.

The bill passed the Assembly 79-0 and the Senate 39-0.
