SPEAKER ROBERTS HAILS NEW REGISTRY AS ANOTHER STEP TOWARD COMBATING AUTISM IN N.J.
Says Gov. Corzine has helped make N.J. a leader in autism treatment
(TRENTON) – Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts Jr. on Thursday welcomed Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s announcement that New Jersey has launched an electronic autism registry and hailed it as another key step toward combating New Jersey’s highest-in-the-nation autism rate.
Roberts sponsored and championed the law creating the registry, along with numerous other measures to raise awareness about autism and encourage early diagnosis and intervention.
“We’ve long had a clear need for more accurate reporting and information on the prevalence of autism in New Jersey,” said Roberts (D-Camden). “We’ve made great strides toward improving our autism diagnosis and treatment, yet there’s so much we still don’t know about this mysterious disability. I commend Gov. Corzine for this vital step and continuing the partnership that has made New Jersey a leader caring for children with special needs.”
The New Jersey Autism Registry requires psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists and medical professionals to register children diagnosed with autism and birth defects such as Down’s Syndrome, cleft palate and heart or muscular defects.
The registry is confidential and will be used to refer families to services and enable officials to better assist New Jersey’s families with autism and other special needs.
Roberts noted the state already requires require conditions such as cancer be maintained in a central registry.
“Doing the same for autism and birth defects will improve our knowledge, understanding and analysis and enhance the services provided to children and their families,” Roberts said.. “This registry is a sensible step forward that will help boost the research and services that will allow our children with special needs to fulfill their great potential.”
