WAGNER BILL TO HELP HOMEOWNERS REPLACE UNDERGROUND FUEL STORAGE TANKS NOW LAW
(PARAMUS) – Legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Connie Wagner to help homeowners more easily remove underground petroleum storage tanks has been signed into law by Gov. Jon S. Corzine.
“Closing or replacing these tanks not only protects the environment from petroleum leaks, but also provides homeowners with increased energy efficiency and long-term energy cost savings,” said Wagner (D-Bergen).
Under the new law (A-3739), eligible owners or operators of the tanks can apply for financial assistance from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority before expending their own money to remove the tanks.
Under previous regulations, eligible owners or operators had to expend their own money to complete the work before applying for reimbursement from the NJEDA.
“Under the former regulations, homeowners risked an expensive improvement without assurance of financial assistance,” Wagner said. “This new law encourages the voluntary closure or replacement of residential heating oil tanks in a sensible way that will benefit the state, homeowners and the environment alike.”
