OLIVER: FAMILY LEAVE BACKED BY CORZINE AND DEMOCRATS PROVING WORTHY TO N.J. FAMILIES (EAST ORANGE) – Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver (D-Essex/Passaic) released the following statement Thursday as Gov. Jon S. Corzine announced more than 5,000 New Jerseyans have received paid family leave insurance to care for sick family members or new children since the program took effect on July 1. Oliver was a prime sponsor of the law: “Thanks to Gov. Corzine and the Democratic Legislature, more than 5,000 New Jersey workers have received the peace of mind of knowing they didn’t have to decide between putting food on the table or caring for a sick family member or new child. “Paid leave insurance is among the most family friendly policies we can provide New Jersey’s working families. This compassionate program keeps families together at their most precious moments and gives them the chance to love and care for one another without forgoing a paycheck. “Despite those who voted against this pro-family policy, we cannot be so inflexible as to prevent hard-working New Jerseyans facing a family crisis from having access to a modest benefit that can keep them financially stable. “And not only is this good for families, but it’s good for business. By making the workplace more family-friendly and reducing turnover, all businesses are collectively benefiting from a more productive workforce.” Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} On the Net: www.assemblydems.com NJ Assembly Democrats on YouTube NJ Assembly Democrats on Facebook Sign up for NJ Assembly Dem e-mail alerts
Christie budget calls for 'shared sacrifice' Gov. Chris Christie today unveiled a $28.3 billion state budget plan that includes deep cuts in spending on property tax rebates and aid to municipalities, schools and colleges, as well as the layoffs of thousands of state workers. ...
"Never forget, some of those shouting the loudest are the architects of the disaster we are now suffering. Do we really want another decade of economic failure? No, this spring it is time to clear away the underbrush to make room for growth. So, today, we stop sweeping problems under the rug. We will not hide our problems until
another day. And we are certainly not increasing the tax burden we place upon our people. Today, we are taking necessary and decisive action to reduce state spending and reform state government. The problems we have hidden for twenty years are evident for all to see. The day of reckoning has arrived. Some are saying, by their choice of policies, that we should descend further into debt and deficit, and risk driving more people out of the state with “temporary” tax increases that always turn out to be permanent. I say we must face up to our responsibility." -- Gov. Christopher Christie
