LAMPITT WELCOMES PLANS TO CREATE NURSING SCHOOL AT RUTGERS-CAMDEN
(VOORHEES) – Assemblyman Pamela Lampitt (D-Camden) on Wednesday welcomed plans by Rutgers University to create a School of Nursing at its Rutgers-Camden campus, calling it pivotal progress for South Jersey and health care quality in the region.
“This is great news for New Jersey, but especially South Jersey and our overall quality of health care,” said Lampitt (D-Camden). “The nursing shortage shows no sign of ebbing and has serious implications for our aging population, but programs like this will help ensure high-quality nursing will be available throughout New Jersey’s health care facilities.”
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has predicted a nationwide shortfall of 800,000 registered nurses by 2020, while the New Jersey Collaborating Center for Nursing at Rutgers has calculated that a third of New Jersey nurses would retire within 10 years.
“Anything we can do to boost the ranks of New Jersey nurses is a good thing, but to have that effort be centered at Rutgers-Camden makes it even better,” Lampitt said. “It’s especially pleasing to see the school plans to target specialties such as nursing faculty and clinical nursing in community health settings and home care, areas that have become and will continue to be increasingly important.”
Lampitt also praised plans for an advanced nursing program.
“The nursing PhD program will help develop the top-tier nurse scientists and scholars who will prove vital as medical technology and research advances in the coming years,” Lampitt said. “Keeping pace with the advancing field of medicine will help ensure the region retains the best and brightest nurses and that they’re there for our families when we need them most.”
