QUIGLEY ON SPEAKER ROBERTS’ DECISION TO NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION
(TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Joan M. Quigley (D-Hudson) – the Majority Conference Leader – issued the following statement after Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts, Jr. (D-Camden) announced he will not be seeking re-election:
“Joe Roberts was one of the most policy driven legislators I have ever had the good fortune to work with. While his presence will be missed, his work on election reform and gun violence will continue to positively impact the state.
“Speaker Roberts was a driving force behind allowing voters in the state to vote by mail. And he was a vocal proponent of moving our presidential primary election from June to February, making New Jersey more than just an ATM stop in presidential politics.
“His leadership also made it much harder for criminals in New Jersey to get their hands on guns and use them in crimes, as he shepherded through tougher penalties for gun crimes.
“Joe was a veteran Assemblyman when I was a newly minted freshman, and, over the years, his friendship and his impassioned advocacy made him a fixture of the Assembly in my mind. Not having him with us in January is a concept that is going to take some time getting used to.”
