WISNIEWSKI & CRUZ-PEREZ BILL CREATING VETERANS’ ORAL HISTORY FOUNDATION NOW LAW

WISNIEWSKI & CRUZ-PEREZ BILL CREATING VETERANS’ ORAL HISTORY FOUNDATION NOW LAW

(TRENTON) – Legislation sponsored by Assemblyman John S. Wisniewski and Assemblywoman Nilsa Cruz-Perez to establish a Veterans’ Oral History Foundation is now law. The bill (A-1707) was signed Sunday by Gov. Jon S. Corzine.

The foundation will be devoted to sponsoring activities and raising money for the support and promotion of a veterans’ oral history program

“This will keep the memories and stories of New Jersey’s veterans alive for generations to come,” said Wisniewski (D-Middlesex). “Each generation has a different history to tell, and who better for to hear it from than the people that created that very history. The foundation will ensure the heroic efforts of veterans will never be forgotten.”

“We owe our freedoms to those who have served this nation over the many years, and their histories must never be forgotten,” said Cruz-Perez (D-Camden). “With this new law, quite simply, we’ll be keeping their stories alive, and providing vivid history lessons for our children on what it means to be an American and to sacrifice to protect our liberty.”

The foundation may incorporate, organize and operate in such manner as to be eligible under applicable federal law for tax-exempt status and for the receipt of tax-deductible contributions.

All funds received by the foundation, other than those necessary to pay the expenses of the foundation, will be used exclusively for the support and promotion of a veterans’ oral history program. T

he foundation will be established in the Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs and will consist of nine members, as a board of directors, as follows: the Adjutant General of the Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs, or his designee; six members from recognized veterans groups in the state, to be appointed by the Adjutant General; and two representatives from the New Jersey Militia Museum, to be appointed by the Adjutant General.
