(TRENTON) - Assembly Veterans and Military Affairs Chairman Jack Conners was among those today welcoming home nearly 3,000 New Jersey soldiers who voluntarily served in Iraq.
During ceremonies for the troops, Conners joined members of the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, military leaders, state officials and residents to celebrate the return of the state's second largest deployment of New Jersey National Guard members.
Conners issued the following statement:
"I extend a warm heartfelt welcome home and thank you to each of the brave members of the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team who have returned to their home -- New Jersey.
"The sacrifices made by these New Jersey soldiers will march on - this was the largest deployment of New Jersey soldiers since World War II.
"More than 3,000 brave men and women voluntarily put their lives on hold and risked their personal safety to serve our country in Iraq.
"We proudly call these National Guard members, our friends, family and neighbors - but most of all we call them heroes.
"We have been blessed to have every New Jersey citizen soldier return home and be reunited with their loved ones.
"I will redouble my efforts to fight for New Jersey veterans to ensure they have support and services for reintegration, education, health care and new opportunities.
"I am honored to take part in today's celebration to honor the safe and sound return of each of these local heroes who represent towns in every single county of the State.
"New Jersey has the deepest gratitude for the 50th Infantry Brigade's sacrifices and service to our country and on behalf of every American citizen -- Thank you!"
