Lawmaker Introduces Legislation Before Memorial Day to Recognize Decorated Vets
(FORT LEE) - Assemblywoman Joan Voss has introduced legislation that would honor decorated war heroes who have received the Bronze Star Medal for their service in the United States military with a special license plate.
The Bronze Star is a decoration awarded by the United States Army for heroism or meritorious achievement in ground combat.
"As a nation we set aside Memorial Day to recognize the sacrifices of all of the men and women who gave their lives for our country," said Voss (D-Bergen). "By creating a license plate for New Jersey veterans who have received the Bronze Star, we will be recognizing war heroes not just on special holidays but everyday."
Currently, New Jersey law provides for the issuance of special plates for recipients of the Silver Star, which is awarded by the U.S. military for gallantry in action.
The bill (A-2908) would create a special license plate that would bear an unique design to identify the holder as a Bronze Star recipient. The measure would enable recipients of the Bronze Star to purchase the license plate for a one-time $15 fee.
"This would be only the second time New Jersey has created a special license plate to pay tribute to the service men and women who have served to protect our country," said Voss. "Special Bronze Star license plates would set apart those New Jersey veterans who have earned one of the most prestigious military honors."
The Bronze Star Medal may be awarded for bravery, merit, or meritorious service. When awarded for bravery, it is the fourth-highest combat award of the U.S. Armed Forces and the 9th highest military award (including both combat and non-combat awards).
The bill has been referred to the Assembly Military and Veterans Affairs' Committee.
