HARRY LENNIX -- STAR OF THE MATRIX & 5 HEARTBEATS -- CAMPAIGNS ACROSS ESSEX FOR CORZINE, WEINBERG & NEW JERSEY DEMOCRATS

Hollywood Star Encourages Young and Newly Registered Voters to Keep Momentum Going

Hollywood star Harry Lennix of The 5 Heartbeats and The Matrix today campaigned across Essex County to engage voters in North Jersey on behalf of Governor Jon S. Corzine and Senator Loretta Weinberg’s re-election efforts and Democrats running for office across New Jersey.

“I appreciate Harry Lennix taking the time to go out and discuss the importance of this year’s election today,” said Corzine. “Last year, we elected a President that represents all of us and our Democratic values. This year, we need to keep that momentum going. Register early, vote by mail or come out on Election Day November 3rd but, whatever you do, make sure your voice is counted.”

Lennix, a veteran campaigner in Democratic politics, previously campaigned on behalf of President Barack Obama during last year’s presidential election.

Lennix focused his efforts on engaging young and newly registered voters at public events at a local Newark restaurant, a tailgating event before the 38th Annual Urban League Football Classic at GIANTS Stadium and neighborhood barbershops throughout Essex County -- an integral community for voter turnout for New Jersey Democrats.

Sarlo Introduces Measure To Require High Schools To Have Certified Athletic Trainers On Staff

SARLO INTRODUCES MEASURE TO REQUIRE HIGH SCHOOLS TO HAVE CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINERS ON STAFF

Says Measure Would Ensure Proper Medical Attention for Injured Student-Athletes

TRENTON – Senator Paul A. Sarlo, a long-time proponent of youth sports, today unveiled legislation that he will introduce when the Legislature reconvenes this Fall to require high school athletic departments to have a certified athletic trainer on staff in order to properly treat sports-related injuries, head trauma and heat exhaustion.

“School sports give our kids an opportunity to be active, healthy, and learn the fundamentals of the game, but proper precautions must be in a place to make sure these activities are safe,” said Senator Sarlo, D-Bergen, Essex and Passaic, who also volunteers as a coach for various sports in the Wood-Ridge recreation leagues. “It seems like common sense that when a team is practicing, that there be a trained medical professional on hand to provide immediate care if need be. This bill is about keeping our student athletes safe and out of harm’s way.”

MAYOR BOLLWAGE STATEMENT ON CHRISTIE VISIT TO ELIZABETH

MAYOR BOLLWAGE STATEMENT ON
CHRISTIE VISIT TO ELIZABETH

Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage today released the following statement following Bush Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie’s visit to Elizabeth:

“Christie has called pre-k education ‘baby-sitting’ and, on the issue of our children’s education, he continues to be wrong when it matters most.  His refusal of $2 billion in education funding from President Obama’s stimulus plan concerns me because it would lead directly to a $2 billion property tax increase and would jeopardize 35,000 teacher jobs across the state.  Governor Corzine has made investment in education a priority since taking office because he recognizes the importance of ensuring our children are best prepared for the ever-changing job market.  His commitment to our children is evident in his dedication to providing increased education funding in the classrooms as well as his authorization of almost $4 billion to build schools and provide the best possible learning environment for students across the state.”

Buono Bill Would Ban Smoking In Public Parks And Beaches

Citing studies that document the health risks to non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke, as well as environmental concerns, Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex) said today she is introducing a bill to ban smoking at all state, county and municipal parks and beaches.

“While cigarette smoking has declined dramatically since the first Surgeon General’s report more than 40 years ago, tobacco continues to take a deadly toll,” Sen. Buono said. “A report on tobacco use in America by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies found that among the 440,000 annual deaths caused by tobacco are 50,000 non-smokers killed by the smoking of others.”

McKEON: GOOD GOVERNANCE ABOUT STRIKING A BALANCE

McKEON:  GOOD GOVERNANCE ABOUT STRIKING A BALANCE

LAWMAKER STUMPS FOR CORZINE AT NJ LAWSUIT REFORM ALLIANCE MEET

Assemblyman John F. McKeon today told an audience of business executives and attorneys that good governance is about striking a balance and that is what Governor Jon S. Corzine has been doing to shephard New Jersey on the path of recovery through one of the most challenging times in the nation's history.

Stumping for Corzine, McKeon an attorney and partner in a law firm, told a meeting of the New Jersey Lawsuit Reform Alliance (NJLRA) that while Governor Corzine has been fighting to keep the costs down of doing business in New Jersey, he has also been striving to provide a safety net for the most vulnerable.

The NJLRA is a statewide, bipartisan group of businesses, individuals and organizations committed to improving the state's civil justice system by advocating for legal reforms in the legislature and in the courts.

"Our Governor understands legal costs place a burden on business and that it is important to keep them down. That is why he vetoed legislation that could drive up costs for the medical community and insurance companies in New Jersey," McKeon (D-Essex) said.

SWEENEY HONORED BY AGUDATH ISRAEL OF NEW JERSEY AT 2ND ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE BREAKFAST

SOMERSET – On Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney was honored by the members of Agudath Israel of New Jersey at their 2nd Annual Legislative Breakfast at the Regency Jewish Heritage Home for the Aged in Somerset.

“I appreciate the kind words from the members of Agudath Israel, and pledge to work closely with them as we address issues concerning New Jerseyans of the Jewish faith,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Thorofare. “As we know, the concerns of New Jersey’s substantial Jewish population are oftentimes the concerns of all New Jerseyans. We all have an interest in more affordable government, better services, and more cost-efficiency at all levels, and I think we can benefit by incorporating the ideas and input of people from all faiths and backgrounds as we attempt to solve these problems for all the people of the Garden State.”
