GORDON BILL TO REQUIRE CONFIRMATION OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR HOMEOWNERS REMEDIATING UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANKS SIGNED

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Bob Gordon which requires the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA) to provide written commitment that an eligible owner or operator of a non-leaking underground storage tank is eligible for financial assistance under the State’s cleanup fund regulations to replace or close the tank was signed into law yesterday by Governor Corzine.

“Underground storage tanks – even fully-intact tanks – can quickly become dangerous contaminants to groundwater and soil quality if they spring a leak,” said Senator Gordon, D-Bergen.  “New Jersey has to do everything it can to encourage tank owners to keep on top of repairs, or close tanks if a more environmentally-conscious heating alternative is available.  Rather than requiring homeowners to finance the cost of upkeep and then reimbursing them a portion of that cost if they’re eligible, homeowners acting in good faith will now have assurances of financial assistance before the project begins.”

Buono-Scutari Bill Expanding NJ Motor Vehicle Lemon Law Signed

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman, Senator Barbara Buono, and State Government Committee Chairman, Senator Nicholas P. Scutari, which expands consumer protections under New Jersey’s motor vehicle “Lemon Law” from two years or 18,000 miles to two years or 24,000 miles, was signed into law yesterday by Governor Corzine.

“This change is reasonable and sorely needed since current usage patterns and needs have changed considerably,” said Senator Buono, D-Middlesex. “Drivers commute to work much farther than when the law was enacted 18 years ago and subsequently consumers are finding their lemon law rights are limited to approximately a year of usage. In fact, the average consumer reaches the 18,000 mile limit after only 14 months. By broadening the window through which individuals can file claims to 24,000 miles or two years, we will be affording many hardworking New Jerseyans enhanced consumer protection.”
