FARBER MUST RESIGN
Top law enforcement official abuses power; New Jersey deserves better

Kinnelon – 26th Legislative District Republican Assembly candidate Larry Casha issued the following statement calling on Attorney General Zulima Farber to resign her office as New Jersey’s chief law enforcement officer:

“Enough is Enough: Attorney General Zulima Farber must resign. As the highest law enforcement officer in the state, Farber has abused her power and authority to intervene in her boyfriend’s traffic violations this past Memorial Day. But that is not the end of the outrage.

“Farber is the subject of a special investigation that will cost taxpayers $75,000 per month*. After Governor Corzine raised our taxes and continues to spend like there is no tomorrow, these additional expenditures are just another slap in the face.

“Farber should be required to reimburse the state for this investigation. What kind of example is she setting for the children of our state? We should accept nothing less than an immediate resignation.

PRESS RELEASE

State Senator Gerald Cardinale

Cardinale Letter Concerning Farber

July 18, 2006

Honorable Jon S. Corzine
Governor of New Jersey
Executive Chamber State House
Trenton, New Jersey 08625

Dear Governor Corzine:

I am pleased that you have taken the unprecedented step of appointing an independent counsel to investigate the conduct of Attorney General Zulima Farber during a traffic stop in Bergen County involving her live-in boyfriend, Hamlet E. Goore Jr. It is in everyone’s interest to conduct a fair, thorough, non-political and expeditious investigation into this matter.

Further, it is appropriate and prudent that General Farber has retained outside counsel to represent her in this matter since the Office of the Attorney General is unable to represent her due to a clear conflict of interest. However, in order to protect the public trust, I believe it is important for the public to know the hourly rate that will be charged by General Farber’s attorney. Will the taxpayer’s of New Jersey be billed at the private practice rate?

Additionally, I urge that the independent counsel determine whether the actions of the Attorney General were within the scope of her office. If not, I believe that it would be incumbent upon the Attorney General to reimburse the tax paying public for the attorneys fees incurred as a result of this investigation. The same would be true if she were found at fault in this incident.

I am confident that you agree that any investigation of the top law enforcement officer of the State must be as open and transparent as possible. Therefore, any and all documents related to the costs of this investigation should be released to assure the public that the investigation is proceeding without delay or hindrance.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from your office in the near future.

Very truly yours,

Gerald Cardinale
