Bill is Designed to Inform Women, Detect More Infections, Still Gives Freedom to Opt Out

            TRENTON  –  In a move that could put New Jersey at the forefront in the national fight against HIV transmission to newborns, a Senate panel today approved a bill sponsored by Senate President Richard J. Codey (D-Essex) and Senator Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen) that will require all pregnant women to be screened for HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), as well as newborns whose mother’s HIV status is either positive or unknown at the time of delivery.

Three days after the Republicans for Responsible Government team filed their petitions to run Clara Nibot for Senate, Frank Cifarelli and Wojciech Siemaszkiewicz for Assembly, Democrat Bosses in Legislative District 37 have realized that having real primaries is not in their own interests. The incumbents, Senator Weinberg, and Assembly incumbents Johnson and Huttle were retained to carry on Democratic business as usual politics. The talk of far reaching reforms within the Bergen County Democratic Organization was suddenly abandoned in favor of preserving entrenched party power. Hundreds, if not thousands of reform minded, honest Democratic activists, who put
their political lives on the line for incumbent Senator Weinberg and Assembly incumbents Johnson and Huttle were sacrificed for their incumbents' own personal gain.

FORMER ENGLEWOOD MAYOR FILES ELEC VIOLATION AGAINST KEN ZISA FOR LACK OF DISCLOSURE OF ATTORNEY FEES

ENGLEWOOD - Englewood resident and former Mayor Sondra Greenberg registered a complaint against Charles "Ken" Zisa with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission ("ELEC") for lack of disclosure of attorney fees. Her letter to ELEC dated March 13, 2007 states: "I am writing to you today because I am deeply concerned after reviewing Charles "Ken" Zisa's ELEC reports since October of 2005."

The U.S. Attorney's subpoena of Englewood Democratic Municipal Chairwoman Violet Cherry's records today has become an issue in the 37th district Democratic primary. Cherry, who works for the Englewood Health Department, is backing State Sen. Loretta Weinberg, Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle and Assemblyman Gordon Johnson against challengers supported by the Bergen County Democratic Organization.
