Bushman surprised by NJEA endorsement, and will take it

State Assembly candidate Adam Bushman of Jamesburg chalked up a point last week in the 14th district when he outbid his Republican running mate and his Democratic opponent with an endorsement by the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA).

"I was pretty excited and surprised," said the candidate, a software engineer and former Jamesburg councilman. "I didn’t think I had a good shot at the endorsement. I went in there and told them I thought education is the key to everything."

Never easy in number 14

The 14th District features a match-up at the top of the ticket between a man generally regarded as the Republican golden boy, Assemblyman Bill Baroni of Hamilton Township, and former rate payer advocate, Democrat Seema Singh of South Brunswick Township, who is the state’s first Indian-American woman candidate for Senate.

Then there’s the brawl below, where Assemblywoman Linda Greenstein of Plainsboro hopes to hold onto her seat to win a fifth term by turning back Republican challengers Adam Bushman of Jamesburg and Tom Goodwin of Hamilton. Joining Singh and Greenstein on the Democratic ticket as the second Assembly candidate is Wayne DeAngelo of Hamilton.

The known Trenton quantities are favored here, which means both Baroni and Greenstein have the edge. Greenstein has a workhorse reputation and high name recognition, is pro labor and pro environment with a long record of public advocacy in elected office and as a lawyer. With his regular guy image, pro labor views and endorsements to show for it, Baroni appeals to working class families. Like Greenstein, he also likes to boast that he has enough of an independent record to entice the district’s core independents, who make up 73,183 of the voters in the 14th, compared to the Republicans’ 17,681 and the Democrats’ 29,366.

For Keith Hamilton, five times may be the charm

One key Democratic leader says that the four-term Mercer County Freeholder Keith Hamilton is the clear front runner for the right to challenge Republican Assemblyman William Baroni in 2007.

The 52-year-old Hamilton has sought party support to run for the Legislature in each of the past four cycles, but without success. Democrats picked fellow Hamilton Township resident Gary Guear to run for the Assembly with Linda Greenstein in 1999 -- the year they unseated GOP incumbents Paul Kramer and Barbara Wright. Hamilton explored a challenge to Republican State Senator Peter Inverso in 2001 and 2003, but backed off when Democrats instead picked Sheriff Samuel Plumeri and former Assemblyman Anthony "Skip" Cimino, respectively. In 2005, Hamilton dropped his Assembly bid when party leaders decided to support Daniel Benson, a Hamilton Councilman.

To run for the Assembly, Hamilton will need to give up the Freeholder seat he has held since his 1995 election. Democrats suggest that his seat will go to another Hamilton Township Democrat, possible former Councilman Wayne DeAngelo.

Hamilton won the Mercer County portion of the 14th district (Hamilton Township and West Windsor) by wide margins in his 2001 and 2004 Freeholder races.
