Republican freeholder candidates target Wallace in Gloucester

Gloucester County Freeholder Warren Wallace refused to discuss legal action he has taken against UMDNJ, despite Republican Freeholder candidates Phyllis Scapellato and Larry Wallace questioning his timing in filing a lawsuit against his former employer.

In his May 28 lawsuit, Wallace claims he was a victim of racial discrimination when UMDNJ fired him two years ago as a dean at the school’s Stratford campus.

The Republicans say Wallace’s relations with disgraced former state Sen. Wayne Bryant (D-Camden) have more to do with the Democratic incumbent’s UMDNJ troubles.

"Simply amazing," Scapellato said. "He waits until he’s up for re-election to file a bogus lawsuit to take the attention away from his wrongdoings. Warren Wallace filed this suit as an election year stunt to hide from his connections to Wayne Bryant."

Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney has decided to seek re-election to the Gloucester County Board of Freeholders, despite his earlier announcement that he would not run again.  "There is going to come a time for me to leave," Sweeney told the Gloucester County Times on Monday. PRESS RELEASE

State Senator Gerald Cardinale

June 2, 2006

Honorable Jon S. Corzine

Governor

Executive Chambers

State House

Trenton, New Jersey 08625

Dear Governor Corzine:

I am writing to call your attention to a matter of great importance to those of us who are concerned with the precipitous decline in ethical standards that has occurred over the last four years.

As you may be aware, recent media reports indicate that the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) has terminated the employment of Warren Wallace, the Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at the School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford. While officials at UMDNJ have declined to explain the reasons for Dr. Wallace’s dismissal, media reports strongly suggest that the firing was related to the ongoing criminal probe of the university by federal law enforcement, and the allegation that documents related to that investigation were shredded by persons at the Stratford campus.

In your “State of the State address, you called for an “historic effort to end the toxic mix of politics, money and public business. The situation involving Dr. Wallace provides you with an opportunity to translate your inspiring rhetoric into action. Specifically, I call your attention to the fact that Dr. Wallace is a sitting gubernatorial appointee to the Delaware River and Bay Authority, and currently serves as chairman of the authority. Given the issues that come to light involving Dr. Wallace, I believe that it is clearly inappropriate

for him to continue in any capacity as a representative of the State Government. Certainly, if there were compelling ethical reasons to dismiss him from his post at UMDNJ, then he should not be permitted to continue to serve as a Commissioner of the Delaware River and Bay Authority.

Under the interstate compact that created the Delaware River and Bay Authority, you appear to have the statutory power to dismiss Dr. Wallace pursuant to N.J.S.A. 32:11E-4. Accordingly, I urge you to take immediate action to remove Dr. Wallace from the authority. Moreover, Dr. Wallace’s term as an authority commissioner concludes on July 1, 2006. At the very least, you can demonstrate your commitment to restoring the ethical standards of State Government by publicly pledging not to submit Dr. Wallace’s re-appointment to the Judiciary Committee for advice and consent of the Senate.

Along with the thousands of New Jerseyans who seek to restore faith in the institutions of their government, I look forward to your swift and decisive action in this matter.

Very truly yours,

Dr. Gerald R. Cardinale (D.D.S)

Senator, District 39

c. Honorable John H. Adler, Chairman

Senate Judiciary Committee

GOVERNOR SHOULD REMOVE WALLACE FROM DRBA
Shredding Accusations Warrant Removal From Sweetheart State Job

Senator Gerald Cardinale, (R-39), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee sent the attached letter today calling on Governor Jon S. Corzine to immediately remove Dr. Warren Wallace from his post at the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) following his dismissal from his post at the (UMDNJ). Articles in the press have reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was forced to intercede at the Stratford Campus of UMDNJ because documents that may have been critical to an on-going investigation were being shredded in Dr. Wallace’s office. Dr. Wallace was appointed to the DRBA by former Governor McGreevey in 2003.
