What's happening in seven key towns

ORANGE Candidates for mayor: At-Large Councilman Donald Page, North Ward Councilwoman Tency Eason, West Orange Patrolman Eldridge Hawkins, Jr., Zoning Board Chair Janice Morrell, activist Betty Brown, Planning Board Chair Dwight Holmes.

ORANGE - Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex) has invested his time, name and $2,600 in Eldridge Hawkins, Jr., son of his former seat mate in the Assembly, who voted in his first Orange election just last year.

Codey’s political enemies will crow if his candidate fails to get anything short of a first place finish, but the former governor’s pick of a 28-year old with "it factor" potential could pay political dividends in the future.

Barse defends Vineland master plan process

Challenger Robert RomanoChallenger Robert Romano

VINELAND - At their debate in the Ramada Inn here today, Mayor Perry Barse defended his administration’s master plan process in the face of an attack by opponent Robert Romano, who cited a judge’s ruling that the process was not transparent.

"The planning board had 16 open public meetings, held in Vineland City Council meetings, with opportunities for emails and phone-ins," said Barse. "We started the process a year ahead of time. The Vineland City Council chambers were full of residents, and many more watching at home. That’s my opinion."

Veteran Barse calls out challenger Romano in Vineland

Vineland Mayor Perry BarseVineland Mayor Perry Barse
VINELAND - On the side of a highway in south Jersey, sitting at one of the back tables in the Ramada Inn while Chris Christie spoke in general terms about public corruption, Police Lieutenant Robert Romano smiled grimly with a sense of recognition.

"It’s ironic that Chris Christie’s here, because ethics have been nonexistent in this administration," said Romano, who’s running against two-term Vineland Mayor Perry D. Barse. "The citizens aren’t involved in the process of making decisions. There’s no open door policy. It’s not conducive for people to go see the mayor."

A 35-year veteran of the Vineland Police Department who charged up the street crimes unit for eight years, Romano said Barse has improperly tampered with the qualifications for the departmental directors’ positions, and the result has proved an embarrassment for the Cumberland County city of 56,000 with a budget of $52 million.

"When I’m mayor, I’m going to make sure qualified people are directors of the departments," said Romano. "We’re going to review all the directors’ positions."

Sore loser

Michael Schenk had a bad night on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Millville High School teacher lost his bid for Cumberland County Freeholder, and was charged with domestic assault. Police say that Schenk, a Republican who finished last among the four candidates, was involved in an incident as he was leaving his election night party. His wife called police from her cell phone and had "redness around her eyes" when she arrived at Vineland police headquarters, according to a Daily Journal report.

Cape May GOP wants both Assembly seats in District 1

GOP insiders say that Cape May County Republicans want to nominate two Assembly candidates to run against Democratic incumbents Jefferson Van Drew and Nelson Albano in 2007. Cumberland County has the Senate seat and Republican Nicholas Asselta of Vineland will head the legislative ticket. Trenton Republicans had been pushing a slate of Cape Mayor County Freeholder (and Sea Isle Mayor) Leonard Desiderio and former Cumberland County Freeholder James Sauro.

In a district the George W. Bush carried in 2004, Van Drew won a massive landslide in his bid for a third term last year: he finished almost 9,000 votes ahead of his running mate, nearly 16,000 votes ahead of the Republican incumbent, and more than 24,000 votes in front of the other GOP candidate. Helped by Van Drew's coattails, state Democratic money and numerous mistakes by the state GOP, Albano, a Vineland labor official and advocate for tough drunk driving laws, defeated six-term Republican Jack Gibson by 6,749 votes. Gibson trailed Albano in Cape May County by 107 votes (running more than 2,000 votes behind the GOP Sheriff and County Clerk candidates). Gibson, who lost to Van Drew in 2001 and returned in 2003, is possibly the only Assemblyman in modern New Jersey history to lose the same seat twice.

Republicans were in trouble in April 2005 when their candidate for the second, seat, Upper Township Committeeman Andrew McCrosson, forgot to file his nominating petitions. That left a perennial gadfly, George Cecola, unopposed. State Republicans tried to mount a write-in campaign to nominate Sauro, but without the support of Cape May Republicans, they failed, allowing Cecola to take the second slot.
