Jon Corzine, already the current most Anti-Taxpayer Governor in the United States and the most Anti-Taxpayer Governor in New Jersey’s history, chose State Senator Loretta Weinberg to be his running mate for Lieutenant Governor on Saturday, July 25th.

United States Representative Steve Rothman (D-Fair Lawn) said that he is “delighted” that Gov. Corzine has offered state Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) the number two spot on the ballot.

“Loretta brings a tremendous amount of experience and integrity to this position, and she is a champion of government reform and ethics.  She’s got tremendous energy, and she’s fearless.  I think it was a great choice,” he said.

Rothman said he lobbied Gov. Corzine to pick Weinberg.  

Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle (D-Englewood), who has spent the last four years as one of Weinberg’s key allies, said Weinberg offers more than just a reformer reputation.  Although her anti-corruption reputation may help, Huttle said the full package will draw in votes for Corzine not just in the battleground county of Bergen, but statewide.

Bergen County Republican Chairman Bob Yudin said today that Gov. Corzine’s choice of state Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) for the new position of lieutenant governor will not win Corzine “one additional vote.”  

“Assuming it’s official, I don’t see any positive gain for Corzine.  Loretta’s strength is in her senatorial district, which is District 37,” said Yudin.  “Anyone who’s going to vote for Corzine out of District 37 would have voted for Corzine whether Loretta is on the ticket or not.”

Factoring into Corzine’s pick was Weinberg's reputation as a good government reformer.  The corruption bust of dozens of public officials, politicians and operatives yesterday injected ethics into the gubernatorial race as a key issue. Moreover, the gubernatorial election will bump up against the corruption trial of former Bergen County Democratic Chairman Joe Ferriero, who fought tooth and nail with Weinberg throughout much of his ten year tenure.

Yudin, however, downplayed Weinberg’s record on reform as based on expediency.
