High Taxes, Cost Of Living & Corruption Driving Jerseyans Away

Senator James J. McCullough, (R-Atlantic), issued the following statement regarding the release of a poll conducted by Monmouth University and the Gannett Newspaper group which  shows that nearly half of New Jerseyans want to move out of state. The Left Marches On Part Six: Emotion Based Politics = Big Government

This November’s ballot is dripping with syrupy feel good politics and phony promises ranging from doling out phantom “Property Tax Relief” to curing Alzheimer’s disease. The New Jersey State Legislature has abandoned all pretense of practical, responsible governance in favor of irresponsible social engineering schemes impacting everything from genetic cloning to manipulation of the state’s real estate market, intent on forcing our population into high density government funded housing projects.

DeCROCE: CODEY’S SILENCE CONFIRMS SENATE DEMOCRATS WILL NOT SHUT THE DOOR ON HIGHER TAXES AFTER THE ELECTION

Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce said he was stunned by the lightening speed with which Democrats responded to a Republican pledge to oppose further tax increases by admitting Democrats will look at raising taxes after the November legislative elections.

Deputy Senate Majority Leader Joseph Vitale, D-Middlesex, who is reportedly jockeying to become Majority Leader in the Senate next year – unless Republicans take control, went on the “Jersey Guys” show on NJ 101.5 FM yesterday afternoon to respond, on behalf of his party, to an announcement by Republican leaders hours earlier that they support initiative and referendum, tough ethics reforms, fiscal restraints, a plan to reduce property taxes permanently – but no new taxes.

Repeal increased taxes on retirees

Assembly Democrats increased taxes on Retirees in 2005

Cifarelli and Siemaszkiewicz pledge Repeal in 2008

In a legislative session which spanned from July 1-July 2 of 2005, (because the Democrats missed the budget deadline of June 30th of that year), a particularly bad piece of tax legislation was inserted into that budget deal, which severely hurt New Jersey's competitiveness with regard to encouraging retirees to remain in our state. Forty-one Assembly Democrats voted Yes for the tax increase, Five Assembly Democrats voted No and One Assembly Democrat abstained. All Thirty-three Assembly Republicans voted No. This vote tally translated into the bill passing by a 41-38 margin. Had Frank Cifarelli and Wojciech Siemaszkiewicz been in the Assembly at the time to vote No, instead of Ms. Weinberg (Loretta Weinberg was in the Assembly at the time)  and Mr. Johnson voting Yes, with everything else being equal, the bill would have actually been defeated 39-40 and the tax increase would not have taken place.

True Cost to Taxpayers

With the highest property taxes in the country, the highest sales tax in the nation and the worst income tax of all fifty states, the question is what is the true cost to taxpayers?  The answer lies in the impact on our lives and our ability to invest in our own quality of life.  The collectivists in Trenton believe they have a right to take from those who are productive to give to those who believe they have a mortgage on the success of others.

Property tax relief won't work

When the Legislature passed the Property Tax relief legislation it enacted about half of the 98 recomendations made by the four special legislative committees this past summer and fall. So that's forty odd reasons to believe that property taxes will decline. I've got one reason to suggest that they won't.
