Saxton endorses Christie

Former Republican Congressman Jim Saxton endorsed ex-U.S. Attorney Chris Christie for governor today.

Saxton, who left the House in January after serving 24 years, said that Christie “will get our state's economy back on track and his proven leadership will provide the platform for improvements in all areas of our state.”

"As someone who has fought to keep jobs in New Jersey, I know Chris's business-friendly plan will reduce taxes for small businesses, break down overbearing regulation, and create an environment where job creation is a reality,” he said.

Christie has the endorsement of all but one sitting Republican Congressmen.  U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-Wantage) has remained neutral.

The case against Lonegan

Last Friday, May 15th, would have been my father's 95th birthday.  During World War II Abraham Sabrin was a partisan commander in his native Poland where he led 231 men and women in combat against the Nazis.  He and his comrades-in-arms were finally liberated by the Russians in July 1944.   After the war my parents decided to immigrate to America, and on August 6, 1949 our family arrived in New York in order to live a free and peaceful society.

Dad provided invaluable advice while I was growing up in Manhattan and the Bronx:"Get an education; there is a right way and wrong way...always go the right way."  And when I told him, in 1997, I was running for governor, Dad did not hesitate to offer this gem:  "Remember, politics is dirty."  Although Dad did not have a Ph.D. in political science, he understood human nature and American politics very, very well.

ANOTHER LONEGAN DEBATE VICTORY, EXPOSES CHRISTIE AS HAVING NO PLAN, NO VISION AND MORE OF THE SAME

Lonegan confident of his flat tax message in debate with Christie

Former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan

The image of Chris Christie still standing and smiling at his podium at the end of last Tuesday night’s debate in the studio of NJN today threw the question back onto Steve Lonegan, who had pledged in the lead-up to “take him out.”

On the eve of their second television encounter - this one taped, not live - Lonegan told reporters in a conference call that he did not feel bogged down in the minutia of defending his flat tax, and trusts in the voters to value detail and explication of a definite plan over what he believes are platitudes from Christie.

“I’ll do what comes naturally,” said Lonegan. “Mr. Christie has spent $1.5 million attacking my tax plan, and I’m still moving up and he’s moving down.”

Ron Paul endorses Lonegan

Texas Rep. and former presidential candidate Ron Paul has endorsed Steve Lonegan for governor.

“I was very impressed by Steve Lonegan’s record of budget restraint as Mayor of Bogota, NJ. Steve has been a vocal critic of runaway spending and taxpayer funded bailouts, and he understands that we must reject the nanny state and return government to its proper, restrained role,” wrote Paul in an email to New Jersey supporters.  “Sending Steve Lonegan to Trenton would be a tremendous victory for the people of New Jersey.”

The endorsement comes just a few days after Murray Sabrin, an ally of Paul’s who chaired his presidential campaign in New Jersey, endorsed Lonegan rival Chris Christie.  Sabrin, a former Libertarian candidate for Governor, won 14% in his bid for the GOP U.S. Senate nod last year.

The Republican Primary: The Most Compelling Case for Christie

In my columns on PolitickerNJ.com, I have made no secret of my admiration for Chris Christie. His record as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey was outstanding in all respects, including his conviction rate, his courage in pursuing corrupt officials of both political parties, and his absolutely unimpeachable ethics, despite all efforts by detractors and political adversaries to distort his record. He is a person of encyclopedic intellect, with the judgment skills necessary to be a wise decision maker, one of the two most important skills a governor must possess, the other being leadership quality, which Christie has in great abundance.
