Corzine has spent $126 million running for office

Jon Corzine has now spent $126 million of his own money running for office, placing him second on the all-time self funder candidate list.  He trails New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, but has spent more personal funds running for office than two-time presidential candidates Ross Perot and Steve Forbes.  The problem for Corzine is that despite all this money, his personal and job approval ratings continue to be upside-down, and independent polls generally don't show him breaking the 40% mark - although he has closed the gap in head-to-head polls with his Republican opponent and has a couple of polls that show him ahead in a race that remains too close to call.

Lonegan: Christie will have to 'maintain' conservative positions or risk losing base vote

Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Steven Lonegan reaffirmed his support for GOP nominee Christopher Christie in an email to supporters today, but under the condition that Christie sticks to the conservative principles he professed in the primary.

"Our nominee for Governor has openly embraced conservatism and if he continues on that path, all of us should work hard for his election," wrote Lonegan.  "As the Republican nominee Chris Christie will also have to maintain his positions on the issues that convinced many Republicans he was a conservative, and convince many in the GOP establishment to go with him."

Christie beat Lonegan by 13 points in last week's primary - 55% to 42%.  Assemblyman Rick Merkt (R-Mendham) received 3% of the vote.

"You have moved your party to the right," Lonegan wrote to his supporters.

Christie pursues Corzine on loan proposal, Lonegan targets Christie on income tax

Former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie

A day after competing with Steve Lonegan in a debate on NJN, Chris Christie kept his sights on Gov. Jon Corzine, strenuously objecting to Corzine’s proposal to take out a $2 billion bridge loan to make up for a budget shortfall, even as questions inevitably tugged Christie back to his ongoing fight with Lonegan, with three weeks remaining in the Republican primary.

Christie called Corzine’s bridge loan proposal “emblematic” of the governor’s poor economic stewardship.

Joined in a conference call with former Prediential candidate and flat tax champ Steve Forbes, Christie laid on a pro-business barrage by pledging as governor to “roll back over-zealous regulation,” which he said has created a toxic business climate in New Jersey. He also reiterated his desire to cut the corporate income tax.

In this, his second teleconference call at least with Christie, Forbes lauded the presumptive Republican frontrunner.

Forbes endorses Christie

Republican publishing tycoon and New Jersey native Steve Forbes today endorsed former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie for governor in a column in his magazine.

Likening Christie to former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Forbes – who ran for the GOP presidential nomination in 1996 and 2000 – said that Christie “comes across as a leader who has the smarts and determination to get big things done” and “won't let conventional political wisdom deter him from his course.”

War of endorsements in 5th District

Former presidential candidates Steve Forbes and Rudy Giuliani have endorsed U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett for re-election.

It’s a war of endorsements in the 5th District today.

U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett’s (R-Wantage) campaign just rolled out its second big name election eve endorsement: publishing tycoon Steve Forbes.

Forbes, a New Jersey native, kept his endorsement brief.

“I’ve known Scott for years. He’s a fiscal conservative who puts taxpayers before big government,” he said in a statement. “Congress needs more common-sense leaders like him.”

Just a little trivia

If the Democratic candidate for President is either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, they will still need to break the curse of the Senate: sitting United States Senators have only won the presidency twice – John F. Kennedy in 1960 and Warren Harding in 1920.  And if John McCain wins the Republican nomination, it will become the first presidential contest between two Senators in American history.

The curse, i.e. the preference for Governors as presidential candidates, was among the reasons Jon Corzine left the U.S. Senate to run for Governor in 2005.  In those days – just three years ago – it is no secret that Corzine had presidential aspirations.  But friends of the Governor say any thoughts of running for national office are pretty much gone.
