Whitman backs GOP candidates

Former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman today announced her support of a group of GOP legislative and local candidates who have been endorsed by the Republican Leadership Council. Whitman co-chairs the group with former U.S. Senator John Danforth and former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele, and says the RLC will help the candidates with financial contributions and volunteer activity over the next few weeks.

“New Jerseyans are forced to deal with daily reports of corruption and fraud – if ever there was a time that our state needs the core Republican values of fiscal restraint and local control, now is that time,” said Whitman. “These candidates and incumbents are the kinds of leaders New Jersey needs to get our fiscal house back in order.”

The campaign sign on a run-down bar in the Chelsea section says Bob Levy, candidate for mayor, will make the streets safe and clean.

Now Levy, two years into office, is suddenly underground, and political operators in city government are appealing to Trenton for guidance about who’s in charge.

Democrats in the District 2 legislative race, meanwhile, today proclaimed a 10-9 round in the inevitable Levy fallout war, and Republicans said not so fast.

Rudy Giuliani now has the support of more than half the Republicans in the New Jersey State Senate.  James "Sonny" McCullough yesterday became the tenth Senator to back Giuliani's bid for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination.  McCullough joins Diane Allen, Nicholas Asselta, Martha Bark, Anthony Bucco, Andrew Cisela, Walter Kavanaugh, Thomas Kean, Jr., Robert Martin and Robert Singer.
