Senator Shirley Turner hits the public housing highrises in Trenton.

Three days before Tuesday’s presidential primary, Senate President Pro Tempore Shirley Turner dispatched campaign volunteers throughout the neighborhoods of Trenton and personally went floor by floor through two senior citizen high rises as she tried to rally support for Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.

"This is the first time we’ve had a presidential primary in the winter, and what I’m generally getting is that people want to support Obama, but they don’t know there’s an election on Tuesday," said Turner. "We want to change that."

Senate President Richard Codey at the Wilshire Grand Hotel todayAfter getting one question cleared up in the affirmative with Sen. Barack Obama, Senate President and former Governor Richard Codey today officially endorsed Obama for president at a press conference in his hometown of West Orange.

"What’s the skinny on the fact that you’re part Irish?" Codey said he asked Obama in a 10 minute conversation with the presidential candidate this morning, six days before the Feb. 5 primary.

"I am," Obama told him.

"Is that on your father’s side?" Codey cracked.

"It’s O’bama," Senator Loretta Weinberg informed the Senate President.

Gov. Jon Corzine likes the idea of Bob Menendez running for Vice President
Gov. Jon Corzine said that he’s not involved with Hillary Clinton’s potential choices for Vice President. But he thinks Bob Menendez would be a good one.

“First of all, it would be a great choice, but I have no idea. I’m not involved in that,” said Corzine before boarding a train that whisked him down to Washington, DC for the Chamber of Commerce’s Walk on Washington. “Clearly Bob has played a meaningful role in the national campaign because of his leadership of Hispanics for Mrs. Clinton, and he’s an able spokesperson on any of the issues he speaks out about.”

Women state legislators supporting Barack Obama for President stood together at Democratic State Committee headquarters in Trenton on Monday to put a collective exclamation point on their endorsement of the Illinois senator.

Senators Shirley Turner and Loretta Weinberg; and Assemblywomen Linda Greenstein, Elease Evans, Cleopatra Tucker and L. Grace Spencer said Obama is the candidate best equipped to deliver change.

The State Senate will vote Monday on legislation to eliminate the death penalty in New Jersey. The bill, sponsored by Senators Raymond Lesniak, Shirley Turner and Nia Gill, would replace the death penalty with life in prison without parole.

(Ewing – November 3, 2007) With three days until Election Day, 15th District Republican State Senate candidate Bob Martin called Shirley Turner's plan to put state police on the streets of Trenton a desperate attempt to cover up her 14 years of failing to address the issue. Martin reiterated his call for a comprehensive plan to combat gang violence with "zero-tolerance" for all crimes and more local police on the streets.

Senator Turner’s rhetoric does not match her voting record on Turnpike sale.

Ewing (November 1, 2007) – With five days until Election Day, Bob Martin, Republican State Senate candidate in the 15th district, continues to explain why he is the choice for change and Shirley Turner is more of the same. Turner recently placed an ad in the Princeton Town Topics claiming that she is against the sale or lease of the toll roads, but her voting record clearly states just the opposite.

The hype on Bob Martin, the self-funding Republican Senate candidate in the 15th district against Shirley Turner, turned out to be exactly that. Martin has raised $124,221 and spent $106,925 -- not exactly an exorbitant amount in a strong Democratic district, and less than half what his campaign boasted he was spending. He's been outspent Turner, who has $445,141 in her warchest to spend if she was nervous, which she is not. So basically, Martin is a self-funder being outspent by his opponent in a district his party hasn't won since 1993.
