Rutgers Study on Stem Cell Research Self-Serving; Proves Nothing

October 7, 2005--

“The Rutgers Study unveiled by Acting Governor Codey yesterday to solicit support for his $380 M spending proposals for stem cell research falls short on facts or proof about the ‘so-called potential benefits’ – economic or otherwise to NJ citizens. It also begs the question, who authorized the study and who funded it? Moreover, the report fails to mention that the research covered under Codey’s plans will include human cloning for the purpose of gestating and harvesting ‘embryonic and cadaveric fetal tissue’ expressly encouraged and authorized under a NJ law authored by the Acting Governor himself. In other words, if these proposals are approved, NJ taxpayers will be complicit in the cloning and killing of human beings and the advancement of a fetus farm industry where human embryos and fetuses are manufactured, gestated and harvested through the newborn stages for their organs, parts and tissues, said Marie Tasy, Executive Director of New Jersey Right to Life.

“Part of Codey’s funding plan includes $150M in public bonds to fund the construction of a Stem Cell Institute which will be jointly run by Rutgers University, who authored the study and the embattled University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ. Both Rutgers and UMDNJ have admitted they have significant conflicts of interest with the state and both are currently under investigation by governmental agencies. Private investment firms are generally not investing in this research. NJ taxpayers should not be saddled with the burden of paying for ‘research’ that even private investment firms have not invested in. The NJ Legislature should act responsibly and reject these morally and ethically bankrupt spending proposals, said Tasy.
